The Trepizone (TREP-ə-zone)
Trepizone
The very top of the water, the bottom of air, and the waterskin between. A play on "troposphere" and "epipilagic zone"
Typically refers to creatures that frequently exist in both zones, or even live there, such as rubber ducks
Reputation is that of a scary threshold. "Trepizone" also plays on the word "trepidation." Those unequipped to cope with both atmospheres fear crossing through to a place that is unfamiliar and likely actively harmful
Ocean's surface also has connotations of death, exile, adventure, and transformation.
More informally called "the shine," a reference to "the sunshine zone" and the fact that, when inside a star, the ocean's surface is BRIGHT
(11/22/23 -- Learned some new terms today. The sea surface microlayer (SML) is the nanometers-thick boundary interface between atmosphere and ocean. The organisms inhabiting this region are called neuston.
I conceive of the trepizone as extending a little above and below the skin surface, so it's not entirely defunct. Now I have several words in my descriptive trepizonic arsenal :)
