Effects of Wasteland Unification

The Wastelands' folding into Eidel after the Fourth Wasteland-Eidel War had significant effects on both cultures.

Religion

Religion was an odd one. Both cultures worshiped the same goddess, but the exact methodology otherwise varied. Eidel, having more natural resources, had less tendency to jump straight to blood sacrifice (by volume, more nidua is sacrificed than blood), typically only reserving it for holy days. So to certain parts of Eidel, the Wasteland's form of worship could be considered more pious.   The response to the marking/choosing ritual was very positive; the Wasteland perception of Eid generally paints them as her abandoned children (fun fact: they quite literally are). To be marked and receive her blessings could therefore be considered a form of salvation- especially given how the Curse did not affect mingling with Eideli (unlike other cultures). While pockets of bitterness and rejection existed, they were the minority by far. This is considered the primary driving force behind the Wastelands' acceptance of Eideli rule.

Governance

The Wastelands would be allowed to choose three candidates, from which the Emperor would choose a governor. While they were technically allowed to present candidates at any time, they traditionally only did so after the previous governor's death. This governor was expected to enforce standard Eideli law through their own means.   One exception to the standard province regulations was in military force: due to the region's nature, all spindles had to be imported. Therefore, it made little sense to impose the standard spindle-based legion structure upon them (which logistically assumed that production could take place within the province to bolster numbers and replenish losses in wartime). Instead, the '13th legion' was composed of more traditionally Wasteland forces.

Immigration

Immigration picked up rapidly after the two nations' consolidation, almost exclusively into Eidel. The Wastelands had their name for a reason. Life for most immigrants wasn't particularly easy- Eideli structures were optimized around spindle labor, after all. Most immigrants found themselves working in the food industry as a result. Due to Blood affinity, buying food and then selling blood actually resulted in a net gain in money. Many who could not find work resorted to this, bleeding themselves out for wages.   Xiphaem masters generally had little trouble acclimatizing. Their skills were in high demand, and those who turned their practice towards alchemy resulted in several great discoveries. Many found themselves marrying into the nobility, as Eideli nobles were eager to add strong Blood-affinities to their lines.   Not everybody left. Fewer people meant more haifge for the remainder, and to those set in their way of life, things got far easier resource-wise.   A few years after the initial immigration wave, large ore deposits were discovered under the wastelands, far from the typically-explored surface caverns that the culture had previously relied on. A sudden boom in the region's mining industry resulted in many who left the barren wastes as children returning to their homeland in search of work.   This was very much planned; several groups knew of large ore deposits beneath the ground, but had no way of extracting them with their current technology and lack of resources. Eidel's more advanced technology would allow the mining of these deeper ores. Once the nations united, they realized their opportunity. Emigrants sold claim to their lands quite cheaply as they sought new lives in the empire's less barren lands. After acquiring plenty of land, the announcement of ore deposits were made, and many found themselves scrambling back.

Technology

While most alchemic processes are destabilized by the presence of ogres, most finished alchemic material could remain stable.   Spindles were particularly well-suited to the Wastelands. Their leeching effect is similar to an ogre's, meaning that most groups were already used to the concept and necessary food storage precautions. Additionally, they could consume haifge.   The Wastelands' xiphaem techniques were far more refined than Eidel's. Processes such as blood pill creation consequently found themselves much improved by the new methods.
