The Calamity

It is said that, in the absence of divinity, man makes its own. What exactly lead up to the calamity, what caused it, or why it happened are all points that might never be answered. The current prevailing theory is that it was a ritual, conducted by the ancient Zalonites, to break The Reticence, but evidence remains inconclusive. What is certain is the fallout it had; devastation across Cearus, but most notably around Oaren. Volcanoes erupted around the planet, storms raged for months after, features of the landscape (most notably Zalon and inland Aechoron) were scarred/altered forever, and all of Zalon's population just vanished. Some scholars hypothesize that the weakeness of the veil to other planes around Oaren is a direct result of the Calamity.
