Chapter: Strange Guests

This is the possible starting chapter for Catching Fireflies. It details Diana and Liam, fresh off of the North Star Mountain Range having hobbled into Sunmere Village to the Blue Lily Inn. Mara, who was working late, greets them and brings them in, giving them a soft landing for the night.
Plot Beats
  • Scene starts with Mara sitting in the entry hall writing in the Tavern/Inn's record book.
  • Mara hears a knock on the door and opens it to see Dawn and Liam.
  • Dawn is in the throws of a painful migraine wave, and is barely functioning. Liam begs for shelter
  • Mara brings them inside. Liam explains that Dawn woke up with a migraine (likely brought on by dehydration) and when they were walking down the stairs leading to the village, Dawn tripped and fell, landing on her wrist.
  • Mara gets Liam to fill a bucket with snow and bring it back, while he's gone she starts wrapping Dawn's wrist in a rag. During this time, Mara asks how Dawn, (and Liam she finally gets his name) got out on the mountain forest during the Time of Rebirth. The forest often has sudden an unexpected storms during this time.
  • Liam returns before Dawn can explain, and Mara instructs him to essentially make an ice pack and put it on Dawns wrist.
  • Mara leaves to the kitchen and gets 2 bowls of soup and some goats milk for them. When she returns Dawn and Liam are still where she's left them, with Dawn having a scrap of Liam's shirt filled with snow on her wrist, they seem to be whispering to each other.
  • Mara gives them both the food she's collected and tells them to eat, then attempts to finish her writings, but she's mainly just watching the duo.
  • When they finish, Mara guides them to the Marigold room, a rather sparsely furnished room with golden yellow curtains and a matching quilt. She shows them the wardrobe, with a clean change of clothes, and tells them to rest, she'll find them in the morning. Dawn and Liam thank Mara profusely and move prepare for sleeping.

Plot points/Scenes

1

Setting the scene: Mara sitting at a worn wooden desk, trying to finish up some entries for the Inn's records before she retires to bed.

  2

How do Diana and Liam get in: Diana is sick, (with a migraine?) and both are freezing and starving, leading to Liam begging Mara for a place to stay, even just overnight.

Or. Liam falls, hurting his wrist, and its Diana who begs for help? Or have the first version, but instead of just a migraine, because of the migraine she stumbles, cracking something in her wrist. (a minor hairline fracture. Something minor enough that it wouldn't be needing like surgery or a full cast. But enough it'd be like a lot of pain.

  3

What happens once they're in? Mara blankets them both, and takes a look at Diana, and ends up giving her a cool wet cloth to put over her eyes, which alleviates some of the pain. She then feeds them, something light, maybe leftover broth with some jerky or something, before getting them a change of clothes so they don't get sicker, and shows them to a bedroom.

Backdrops

Locations

Main Area: The Blue Lily Inn and Tavern

Specifically: the Front Hall & The Marigold Room

The Main Hall

The main hall is about 600 square feet, made entirely of cedar lumber, with a large stone fireplace off-set of the middle. It is a rectangular shape, with two windows on each of the long sides and none on the short sides. The main enterance is on the north side of the rectangle, with the two paned windows to the left of it.

It's normally lit by various lanterns, but at this point only has light coming from the fireplace, which is rather minimal due to the size of the dying fire, and the candlestick that Mara has to light her work on the records. Mara is sitting in the desk nearest the entrance. Behind her are the stairs to go upstairs.

The area to the left of Mara has 3 tables, each with 4 chairs around them, and a bar with 5 stools facing it. The bar is lined up in front of the short side of the building, which has a wooden door that leads to the kitchen and personal living quarters of the inn.

The Marigold Room

The Marigold Room is one of the 4 rooms that the Blue Lily Inn has for patrons. It is the second largest room, about 10 feet by 10 feet. There is one small window at the back of the room, with yellow curtains, which give the room it's name. The bed is large enough for 2 people, and its against the northern wall of the room. At the foot of the bed there is a wardrobe, facing towards the middle of the room. On the south wall there is a small vanity, with mirror, bowl, and a wooden stool.

Threats

Sub-zero temperatures outside, with high winds and snow. Pretty much a blizzard.

Encounters

Encounter between Mara, Diana, and Liam, taking place in the Main Hall Secondary encounter between Diana and Liam, taking place in the Marigold Room.

Past Events

There is evidence of a large party being held in the main hall, with a cooked stew still bubbling over the fire, as well as some empty mugs laying on the bartop.
