Poseidon, the Storm Breaker
Poseidon was the betrayer-titan who was persuaded to withdraw from the Theagony (battle between the gods) before the final battle with the saviour-titans and gods; as such, he is immune to the corruption of Typhon and does not reside in the Celestial Plane, but resides deep beneath the ocean. His power both creates and controls the destructive forces of nature, such as tsunamis, earthquakes and storms. He also commands powerful sea creatures and the immense power of the ocean itself. His close counterpart in the dwarven pantheon is Neptunus Salacis Tonas.
Poseidon is the deity particularly worshipped by sailors, fishermen and others who work with the sea. He is not a patron but a dangerous force to be placated and averted.
Appearance: Poseidon is imagined as a mature, muscular, bearded man of middle age, wielding a trident and accompanied by sea monsters.
Symbols: Poseidon carries a trident (the oceanic equivalent to a scepter), and often rides in a chariot pulled by sea monsters. He is also accompanied by powerful sea monsters.
Personality: Poseidon is no beneficent deity. He wields the destructive forces at his command unpredictably and capriciously, punishing those who do not pay him due deference. Being immanent on the Earth (Prime Material Plane), he is much more able to wield his power to affect mortals even during the Elipation, when magic is absent from the Earth (though during this period he is mostly dormant at the bottom of the ocean).
Game rules:
Alignment | Cleric Domains | Other |
---|---|---|
Chaotic Neutral: though his power can both harm and help mortals, Poseidon wields his power over natural disasters without rhyme or reason. | Tempest, Ocean* | Poseidon's cleric and paladins are often those who have survived near fatal accidents at sea. Those paladins of his that exist are often pirate captains, sworn to conquer and plunder along the sea and share their wealth with him. |
