Niwhaven

Niwhaven is a city of unsavoury reputation, whose original founding on the north-western end of the Ischindar Sea has been lost in the mists of time. In the distant past, it was a home for rebels and pirates, though under the Taorminite empire it became a prosperous trading hub for goods coming from the Three Cathaya. Since the Breaking of the Pact and the dissolution of the Taorminite empire, Niweners have been ruled by the Trierarchy, three powerful dragonborn merchant-warlords. Its rulers are vigorously and violently opposed to the expansion of Mabag Pachamel Grith's influence and power.   Its streets are a chaotic, unplanned maze of narrow lanes, crowded streets, shady alleys and cul-de-sacs. Each of the Trierarchs live in a grand palace built in one of the lesser harbours of Niwhaven, and each has a throne in the central chamber of the the old Taorminite governor's halls, a fortified mansion on a hill to the North of the city, where most public business is conducted.  There is a substantial lizardmen-inhabited slum neighbourhood in the western end of the city.   The climate is subtropical, with a dry season and annual monsoon, and tropical diseases like malaria are common. Apart from trade, the major industries are logging for the timber of local hardwood, shipbuilding, and the production of cash crops like papyrus, cotton and fruits.   Dragonborn, lizardmen and humans make up the largest racial groups in the population, though many halflings and exiles of every sentient race in Casiphon are found in large numbers, from dwarven renegades and elven pirates to former human nobles driven from their homes on the Sundur Coast. It is said that everything can be found for sale in the city, if one has the money and knows who to ask.
