Mabag Pachamel Grith
The area around the high peak of the Mabag promontory, originally settled by coastal Rythi, was later colonised by humans from the Sundur Coast as a trading settlement. The city was abandoned during the Breaking of Nations, but recolonised by Mettyans at the beginning of the Seventh Age. Their third monarch, the king Thachin Dolth, discovered two immense dragon hordes in caverns on Mount Schwere in northern Mettye, and used haul of money and precious items to fund an enormous expansion and building project, including the gargantuan Dolthian Walls, which were at the time built so far from the centre of the city that he was mocked by his contemporaries. It was at this time that the city acquired its second name, Pachamel, meaning 'strongest place'.
The city continued as an incredibly important trading city and naval power, seeming never to cease growing and building for several centuries. The last human monarch, the aging queen Emerina Shamiath Javindret, gave the entire city and its holdings to her advisor and closest friend, the well-known tiefling philosopher Piameth Ghiy. This move, though wildly popular in Mabag Pachamel, earned the ire of other countries and especially the Volerine dwarves and the Taorminite empire, both of whom regarded tieflings with disgust.
Piameth Ghiy made the city of Mabag Pachamel the 'asylum of the world', adding a third name to the city, Grith, the infernal word for 'safe place'. In the following years, a flood on immigration from all over the Ischindar and Emel Sea regions, but especially Ryth and Eyl-Thoul, swelled the population of the city. Almost every tiefling in that part of Casiphon, being openly despised and treated with open hostility, made their way to the city. The Grithi tieflings eventually became the new proud upper class and rulers of the city. A mighty iron colossus of Piameth Ghiy holding a torch and cornucopia (the so-called Colossus of Mercy) stands beside the harbour, a wonder of the world. In addition, the Grey Archive is buried deep below the city, and has been extensively explored and almost completely robbed of its contents, including written records, treasures, magical items and rare magically created creatures.
Mabag Pachamel Grith was a long-standing enemy of the Taorminite empire and its expansion into Ryth and the eastern Emel Sea. The two fought the Hundred Year War, including a seven-year siege of Mabag Pachamel Grith by land and sea. This war, though it harmed both participants greatly, however, was a major contributor to the downfall of the empire, draining resources and drawing forces away from the North-East where the Eliomandrine forces under Kendra's command broke out of the Gates of Gol and eventually captured Taormun itself.
The population of the city, the largest in the world by a substantial margin, has a large minority of tieflings, all of whom are members of the upper class. The rest of the city is made up of local humans and other races from all over Casiphon and the Three Cathaya.
The city and its empire is ruled by the Tridecadrin of the Serene Sages (thirteen members total, seven of whom are tieflings, chosen by the council) and the Council of Three Hundred, also known as the Synod of Ultimate Enlightenment (which annually votes to replace deceased members). All of the members of this organisation are philosophers. This oligarchy oversees a sprawling bureaucracy which runs most of the enterprises of the city and empire, carry out judicial proceedings, educational institutions, and leads the army.
Mabag Pachamel Grith is famous for including temples to every deity in Casiphon. The city includes a smaller but still impressive copy of the Obsidian Temples of Gol, built with black-laquered brick and dedicated to the elven gods; there are also many other temples dedicated in the names of elven, dwarven and human pantheons. Beneath the city there are said to be shrines to the Lords of the Nine Hells contained within a large temple to Hecate in remembrance of the Grithi tieflings infernal heritage. The city also contains a temple to the Erul demigod Mithaeril and is whispered to even contain a place set aside for the forbidden gods, the Thunder Tyrant and Typhon.
