Automatons

These mysterious magical-mechanical hybrid humanoids were first discovered in the ancient ruins in the wilderness of Canim, and were first introduced into society as servants by the Gnomes. Their artificial consciousness is the subject of much research, and whether or not they possess free will is hotly debated. The materials they are made up of and their build vary greatly from model to model. Evidently some ancient society manufactured these creatures for their own purposes. The leading theory right now is that these Automatons were used as tireless and indestructible labourers, who eventually outlived even their creators. Upon losing their masters, and their purpose, they shut down until they were rediscovered, and continued to serve the first things that resembled their creators. They are inextricably linked with the ruins, and those who are not given orders, or who finish their tasks, will occasionally be found wandering towards those places. Many explorers have employed these Automatons in their ruin delving, as they believe they are the most important link yet discovered as to the secret of those lost civilizations.
