Demurgo (duh-MUR-go)
An administrative/government position in charge of an area or settlement, usually relatively small. Anything larger than a small town will need multiple people, and a different system of organization.
A disproprtionate amount of a demurgo's job is playing coordinator and facilitator between people performing other tasks that keep the town functioning.
In most cases, a demurgo is informally elected, and can be replaced anytime the populace loses trust in their decisions. In a very real sense, a demurgo serves at the pleasure of their electorate. The larger the town, the more time the job requires, and the less time the demurgo has for any other income-generating occupation. Which means that they are reliant upon contributions from the people they serve.
Some larger towns will be divided up into sections, each of which chooses a demurgo to represent it on a collective council.
A demurgo holds a position similar to a small-town mayor who makes executive decisions, create laws when necessary, and often serve as judge as well.
