Rifts
Rifts are random tears in space that release Shadowspawn into the world of Penumbra. It is theorized that these "minor" rifts are somehow connected to the grander Dark Rift and are therefore gateways into it, or simply manifestations of the grand rift reaching out and spreading its infestation across the country.
The Kingdom of Solis funds the Adventurer's Guild's Riftbusters to track, destory, and contain incursion from rifts across the country.
