Edward Luthbeth
(a.k.a. Marionettist of Life and Death)
Edward Luthbeth was once the top student of the school of necromancy at Strixhaven Academy. After graduation he became the youngest head of Clan Warhand and quickly rose to stardom in the Kingdom. He was known as one of the greatest mages of his time, reaching the title of Great Sage, one of only seven at the time. However, his time in the limelight did not satiate him, instead it deepened his hunger for power and status
In his youth, Luthbeth was approached by the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen about an expedition into The Dark Rift, he was one of the few survivors and used knowledge from the rift to improve his arcane knowledge and excel in academia. His first foray into forbidden knowledge.
At the height of his research into the dark arts, he was once again recruited to retrieve an important asset and their research from somewhere in the Frozen North. He and his team tracked the asset to a mountainous research facility operated by the The Arcane Council. upon their arrival they only found the research, a mysterious gateway, and its guardian. Deciphering the research codex revealed two things, notes on the existence of and breakdown of temporal magic, and instructions to unlock the device's planar transportation properties which they used to travel to New Barovia where the party got into an altercation with the resident Count Vernan Umbra and barely fled with their lives. Unfortunately, the team lost the research codex as they made their escape, the device was rendered inoperable, and the guardian of the device was mortally wounded.
Shortly after, Luthbeth disapeared with the goal of recovering the temporal codex for himself.
