BUILD YOUR OWN WORLD Like what you see? Become the Master of your own Universe!

Here you can find all of the available languages in Cambrium. Some are considered common languages while others are rarer, which players will require permission from the GM to use. When choosing languages for your character you should consider whether or not it makes sense for your character to know the language - for example, a gnome who primarily lives in the Underdark wouldn't understand Auran, or an owlin who lives on the sky islands wouldn't understand Undercommon.

Common Languages

  • Common - The 'universal' language of Cambrium and the racial language of humans. Most people can speak Common well enough to at least hold basic conversations. It can be likened to English.

  • Elvish - The racial language of elves. There are different dialects for different elvish subsets, but knowing one means a person can more or less understand and converse with another subset of Elvish. It can be likened to Korean.

  • Halfling - The racial language of halflings. Broadly almost all halflings speak the same language with a few dialect changes. It can be likened to Swiss German.

  • Gnomish - The racial language of gnomes, including deep gnomes. While the two dialects and accents sound vastly different in truth there isn't much difference between them as they evolved from the same root proto-language, alongside the Halfling language however that took more of a divergence from the primary 'Gnomish' language, developing into its own language. It can be likened to German.

  • Orcish - The racial language of orcs. It is an off shoot of the Chulese language that was developed amongst pre-history orcs and diverted into its own separate language. It can be likened to Turkish.

  • Dwarvish - The racial language of dwarves. It is believed to share a root proto-language with Giantkin, but split into two distinct languages. It can be likened to Scottish Gaelic.

  • Undercommon - Not a racial language, but a language developed from a mixture of Common and Drow dialect. Much like Common is the standard language of surface sentient races, Undercommon is the standard language of sentient races that live in the Underdark.

  • Giantkin - The racial language of giantkin. Much like Elvish, although different giant races have different dialects they can all interact and converse with one another. It can be likened to Old Norse languages.

  • Goblinoid - The racial language of goblinoids. While most goblinoids also speak beastkin, goblinoids developed their own unique language from it which includes proper spoken words. It is considered the first official language that has developed from beastkin speech.

  • Beastkin - The racial language of the races considered 'beastkin'. It can be split further into Higher Beastkin and Lower Beastkin, but they share a root language that makes them able to communicate. Most of beastkin speech are guttural growls, grunts, snorts and body language rather than developed words like other languages, thus it is yet to be considered an 'official' language in Cambrium. It cannot be used to communicate with wild animals.

  • Molfercitian - The official language of the Molferciti continent. It can be split further into Southern Molfercitian, Central Molfercitian and Northern Molfercitian, but they are mostly interchangeable. It is second only to Common as one of the most spoken languages of Cambrium. Southern Molfercitian can be likened to Italian, Central Molfercitian can be likened to French and Northern Molfercitian can be likened to Romanian.

  • Jhentanese - The official language of the Jhenta continent. It can be split into Northen Jhentanese and Southern Jhentanese but it is mostly interchangable. Northern Jhentanese can be likened to Hindi and Southern Jhentanese can be likened to Punjabi.

  • Iskanese - The official language of the Iskan continent. It is considered having a root connection to Elvish which then developed into its own unique language. It can be likened to Japanese.

  • Cadencian - The official language of the Cadence continent. It is considered the oldest sentient race language in Cambrium. It can be likened to Egyptian.

  • Chulese - The official language of the Chuluun continent. It can be likened to Mongolian.

  • Shaon - The official language of the Shao Jing continent. It can be likened to Mandarin Chinese.

  • Svosinkian - The official language of the Svosinsk continent. It can be likened to Russian.

  • Valese - The official language of the Valbane continent. It is the sentient race language with the least amount of native speakers. It can be likened to Algonquian.

  • Elysian - The official language of the Elysium continent. It can be likened to Greek.

  • Gwyth - The official language of Gwynbodaeth. It can be likened to Welsh.

  • Uskuan - The official language of the Ukusa and Jarnbjorn islands. It can be likened to Icelandic.

  • Felidae - The racial languages of leonin, tabaxi and other feline-like sentient races. It can be likened to Catalan.

Rare Languages

  • Infernal - The racial language of devils, devil-descendent tieflings and other creatures associated with the Hells. It is also spoken by diabolists, with the exception of those who exclusively worship Inca, who speak Ignan as well as Infernal.

  • Celestial - The racial language of celestial races, aasimar and planestouched. It is a distinct, almost sing-song like language that can be described as the sound of a hymn. It is believed that this language developed from the language of the gods. It can be likened to Latin.

  • Talos - The racial language of warforged and other sentient machine life. It is made up of binary code with each letter holding a certain numeric value that can sound incomprehensible to those that do not speak it. It is the most recently developed sentient race language and one of the very few that don't use any other language as its root. It is almost impossible for non-machine sentient races to learn and fluently speak this language. Most machines speak Talos telepathically rather than spoken out loud or through the connection of body devices, during which time they may appear idle or inactive while communicating. It can be likened to binary code.

  • Ignan - The language of fire elementals and other races associated with the element of fire. Some tieflings also use Ignan as a secondary language, particularly if they don't want to associated with their devilish or demonic heritage. It is also spoken by those who worship the deity Abzu, or diabolists who specifically worship Inca.

  • Auran - The language of air elementals, other races associated with the element of air, gith and bird-like sentient races. It is also spoken by those who worship the deities Calloanth and Ravenos. It is considered the primary language of the sky islands of Cambrium and is the most commonly spoken elemental language.

  • Aquan - The language of water elementals, other races associated with the element of water, tritons, sea elves and those who worship the deity Ginnun.

  • Terran - The language of earth elementals and other races associated with the element of earth. It is the primary language of Underdark creatures and monsters. It is the most uncommon elemental language to come across.

  • Sylvan - The language of fae creatures. Unless someone has earned the trust of or is deeply associated with the fae, their queen Nuvelliath or their deity Khiimori, it is otherwise considered blasphemy to faefolk to teach non-fae their language. This is because Sylvan has power in its words, particularly when it comes to oaths and promises, though the 'rules' surrounding these powerful words can be confusing to non-fae folk. Second only to Draconic, Sylvan is one of the most ancient languages on Cambrium. It can be likened to Irish Gaelic.

  • Abyssal - The racial language of demons, demon-descended tieflings, fiends and creatures that orginate from the Abyss.

Class Restricted Languages

Unless your chosen class gives you access to these languages, you cannot choose them.

  • Thieves' Cant - The language spoken amongst thieves, smugglers, assassins and other ne'er-do-wells. It can be 'spoken' in any language, as it is primarily intended to misdirect others listening in by using mundane phrases and references. This also includes pictographs or symbols painted or carved onto walls which may seem like regular vandalism to other people. Transient and unhoused folk use a form of Thieves' Cant to communicate amongst their communities that exclusively relies on pictographs rather than speech. Because this particular subset of the language does not require speech it is universal across all Cambrium continents.

  • Druidic - The language spoken by druids, hermits, hedge witches and other people who consider themselves guardians of nature. It is believed to have been gifted to trusted sentient races by fae, and so has Sylvan as its root language. Druidic can communicate basic ideas and concepts to wild animals and plants, although any reply may not necessarily make sense or hold any useful information, and they are not obligated to reply.

Prohibited Languages

Player characters are not allowed to choose these languages.

  • Draconic - The language of dragons, half-dragons, dragonborn and other creatures associated with 'true' dragons. It is considered the very first language to have formed on Cambrium, and thus its words are infused with tangible power. It is prohibited for non-dragons to learn or speak this language.

  • Deep Speech - The language of illithids, abberations and space-faring sentient races. It is considered the primary language of most space travelling societies, of which Cambrium has none. It rarely uses spoken words and instead often uses a form of weak telepathy to communicate and transfer the sensation of emotion.
