Travelling Expenses

When travelling from place to place, there are usually options in how you want to get there.   If the party simply wants to hike from city to city, camping along the side of the roads, this is viable (and free!). However, camping in the woods comes with it's own dangers, like bandits, and creatures in the night. The DM will be rolling on nights you spend in the wilderness, to determine if you encounter any such things.   You may also stay in towns, travelling during the day and bedding down in lodgings in town for the evenings. This is much safer, but also will draw attention if you aren't careful, and cost money(see PHB on lodgings). Other benefits of staying in lodgings includes the ability to restock on supplies, and possibly get work or news from the local area.   There may be other methods of travel, but these will be circumstantial, so make sure to discuss how you plan to get places.
Note: Many roads are patrolled by guards, and some even require tolls for the larger highways. In addition, many cities and even some larger towns actually cost small fees to enter, in order for them to recoup the costs generally associated with random travelers entering their gates. This also helps keep the "Riff-Raff" out.
