Mark had already been working as a hacker for about ten years when, on Tuesday, February 2nd, 1999, he was attending a hacker conference in Boston. He and fellow hacker August Laine met for dinner at the World of Meat restaurant in town, where they encountered a drug-addled Nathanthew Smith-Worthson. Mark, August, Nathanthew, and World of Meat owner Alexander Ivanov soon found themselves under attack by the sorceress Sara Fitzgerald and a monstrous golem, and Mark witnessed August's death at Sara's hands.
