Alderman

The rank of Alderman is usually bestowed to the leader of a township or village. Some large settlements also use the term instead of mayor. It is not gender specific.

Appointment

In some cultures, the title is passed to the wisest member of the village, in others an election takes place. Some others still are granted by a ruling authority.

Cultural Significance

Some cultures see Alderman as an honorific, bestowing it upon the older, more wise, members of the settlement. Others use it as merely a title for an elected official.
