Points of Interest

The Kelp Gardens

A vast, carefully tended area where villagers cultivate and harvest kelp using sustainable practices. The gardens are essential to Rika’s economy and are a source of pride for the community. Apprentices learn here, guided by experienced harvesters who teach them how to gather without disturbing the delicate balance of the underwater environment.

The Coral Forge

A workshop where artisans craft building materials, decorations, and practical tools from harvested coral. The forge is known for its skilled artisans who can shape coral into durable yet beautiful items, used both locally and traded with nearby settlements.

The Sea’s Bounty Shrine

A small shrine located in a peaceful alcove, where villagers make offerings to honor the ocean’s bounty. The shrine is decorated with shells, stones, and small carvings made by the children of Rika, symbolizing gratitude and respect for the resources they harvest.

Wildlife

The waters around Rika are teeming with marine life, attracted by the rich kelp forests and coral reefs. Schools of fish dart among the coral, while gentle sea turtles and manta rays glide gracefully through the kelp. The villagers have a special relationship with the local wildlife, often working in harmony with animals like sea otters, which help keep kelp-eating species in check. Dolphins are known to visit the village frequently, seen as good omens and guardians of the harvest.

Challenges and Threats

Rika faces the challenge of maintaining its resources in the face of changing ocean conditions and occasional over-harvesting pressures. The villagers are vigilant about protecting their environment, but outside forces occasionally pose a threat, particularly traders who might disregard their sustainable practices. Seasonal storms can also disrupt the kelp gardens, requiring the community to work together to restore damaged areas. Despite these challenges, Rika’s people are resilient and united in their commitment to preserving their way of life and their connection to the sea.
