The Cousins' Rift
The Va’nu’ian–K’laisiian Rift
Type: Historical Conflict
Location: Va’nu, K'lais, and surrounding systems
Factions: Va’nu’ians, K’laisians
Overview
‘Cousins’ by blood, enemies by choice.
The Va’nu’ians and K’laisians share a common ancestry, yet centuries of division have hardened them into rivals. When the K’laisians embraced peace during the days when the K'laisians clans warred, the Va’nu’ians chose war. They left their homeworld behind, refusing the new ideals. Their belief, weakness is to be destroyed, guiding their every choice. Every encounter in space is a reminder of that decision.
Origins
Centuries ago, K’laisian clans renounced violence, seeking cooperation and shared prosperity. The original clans—later the Va’nu’ians—deemed this weakness.
Refusing to conform, they colonized Va’nu, a harsh world of scarcity and strife. They lost their Gifts, their fertile home, and the life they once knew. Resentment took root, and with it, a chasm between two peoples that would never fully close.
Cultural Consequences
- Va’nu’ians: Bitter, proud, and fueled by loss. Every victory or defeat in space is personal.
- K’laisians: Pragmatic, disciplined, and unyielding. They do not hate their cousins but never underestimate them.
Battles erupt often—Va’nu’ians attack; K’laisians defend. The victories of the latter only deepen Va’nu’ian anger.
Names and Identity
K’laisians who settled Va’nu shifted the apostrophe in their names, a subtle marker of divergence. Some Va’nu’ian descendants remain within K’laisiian society—a living reminder of shared blood, lost history, and choices made long ago.
Conflict History
- Early encounters in space were marked by immediate combat.
- K’laisians usually prevailed, reinforcing Va’nu’ian bitterness.
- Va’nu’ians attempted to involve Earth in their war against K’laisians. The plot failed, though most Va’nu’ians remain unaware of the full scope of their leaders’ schemes.
Legacy
The rift defines both civilizations.
- Va’nu’ians: Survivors shaped by loss and resentment.
- K’laisians: Pragmatic victors, cautious but fair.
Every meeting is a test of will, a spark that could ignite conflict anew. History lingers in the void, and the universe remembers.
Current Day
An uneasy truce has finally formed between the warring cousins. They do not constantly battle when they meet, either in space or on land. Though there is still a faction wishing to continue the conflict, more are realizing the benefits of a truce. For the K'laisians are open with their knowledge and willing to share with other races, including their cousins.
Distrust between the races runs high, and only a shaky truce exists. Yet in the shadows, some maneuver and persuade, striving to coax peace from conflict.
