Military Bases

Military Bases

Location: Across all districts

The exterior of K’laisian military bases carried a quiet splendor, presenting a uniformity of design that did not reveal their true purpose. For the first generations of humans arriving on K’lais, these structures were often mistaken for centers of worship or financial institutions, which Earthers referred to as “churches” and “banks.”

Each base is marked by eight-point spires aligned with the six primary directions: North, Northeast, Northwest, and the corresponding southern points. The combination of these spires and the extensive use of sea glass in the construction allowed strategic outward views while creating a distorted, almost abstract view of the interior.

Inside, the bases are equally striking. Entry halls and passages are a particular point of fascination for many, including Violetta, who had admired them since childhood. The main doors open into massive entry halls where dark blue dolomite forms the walls and the floors of the lowest level. Handrails, stairs, and doors are primarily made from manganese and other metals, with their silver-gray color strongly contrasting against the dolomite. Ceilings and floors on all other levels are constructed as a honeycomb of manganese and sea glass, allowing visibility between levels to observe traffic and activity. Even after decades, the combination of material, design, and light continued to inspire both fascination and a sense of calm.

Overview

Military bases serve as the central hubs for operations, command, and medical care within each district. Each base is designed for both peacetime administration and wartime command, with specialized facilities for personnel, high-ranking officials, and sensitive operations.

Construction and Layout

All bases have five levels above ground and multiple levels below. The depth of underground levels varies depending on the size of the base and the district it serves.

  • Walls and Floors: Lowest levels are constructed from dark blue dolomite.
  • Handrails, Stairs, Doors: Made primarily from manganese and other metals, appearing silver-gray against dolomite surfaces.
  • Ceilings/Floors Above Ground Level: Honeycomb pattern of manganese and sea glass, combining structural integrity with aesthetic illumination.

Each base features eight-point spires marking towers at cardinal and intercardinal directions: North, Northeast, Northwest, South, Southeast, and Southwest.

Command and Administration

Each tower is overseen by two admirals, capable of coordinating the district’s defenses and conferring with other districts. In the event of attack, admirals can command from their towers simultaneously. Either for a single distract or with their entire world. Or any combination thereof.

  • Northeast Tower: Contains a specialized room with a constant rolling blackout for operations requiring strict control.
  • Top Level: Restricted to beings of a specific clearance level; used by High Command and admirals.
  • Third Level: Offices for commanders.
  • Ground and Second Level: Offices for other personnel. Some admirals, including retired, semi-retired, and Judge Admirals, maintain offices here at their discretion.

Medical Facilities

All bases include a medical wing with specialized capabilities:

  • High-Security Wing: Exceeds standard containment, used for patients with exceptionally violent or antisocial tendencies.
  • Clean Rooms: Require biosuits for entry to prevent contamination. Oxygen is purified and amplified to levels equivalent to an oxygen tent.
  • Adaptive Lighting: Integrated into honeycomb ceilings, automatically adjusting to occupant needs.
  • Beds: Conforming with adjustable hardness; attached blankets are temperature-controlled.
  • Diagnostics: Floating displays above beds or projected to walls for monitoring and treatment. Common in high-end facilities, military medical wings, and battlecruisers.

Security and Restrictions

  • Access to the top floor and certain rooms is limited by clearance.
  • Admirals and High Command have full discretion over their offices.
  • Northeast Tower blackout room and high-security medical wing are restricted to authorized personnel only.

Features & Special Notes

  • Combines command, medical, and operational functions in a single secure facility.
  • Designed to allow simultaneous coordination across multiple towers and districts.
  • Material choices emphasize durability, contrast, and visibility: dolomite, manganese, and sea glass.
