History & Biography

Early Childhood — Trained by Shadows

Though born into the Landry line, Kaida’s formative years were shaped by Xevyt, the Va’nu’ian who would become the most important figure in her life. From early childhood, he taught her the arts of stealth, misdirection, picking locks, and escaping confinement—the skillset of a thief, yes, but also of a survivor.

In Va’nu tradition, Xevyt tested her with the same intensity used to evaluate their own initiates. She passed every trial he set for her, often with an ingenuity he had not anticipated.

Upon completing a particularly challenging test, Xevyt gifted her a necklace adorned with gems traditionally given to daughters.

She believed it to be a token of pride.

He knew it was a declaration of paternal claim and protection.

Clan-Claimed Daughter

Among the Va’nu, that necklace marks Kaida as irrevocably part of Xevyt Eld'usk’s Clan. Va’nu’ians understand such a claim instantly—and obey it. As long as she wears it, Kaida is considered a daughter of his hearth and blood.

Unbeknownst to her during the events of The Raven: Deals and The Raven: Allies, the claim is more literal than symbolic.

He calls her “the child of my heart,” even when truth cannot yet be spoken aloud. Many may suspect, but none will dare speak their thoughts.

Her skills drew the attention of powerful people, some with questionable motives. She learned quickly that survival required cunning and knowing which deals to refuse…and which bargains to accept.

Induction into the Ri’Tachi

During The Raven: Bargains, Xevyt formally inducts Kaida into the Ri’Tachi , an elite Va’nu order of operatives, spies, and enforcers.

This induction is unprecedented for a human.

Though some Va’nu’ians doubted her right, Kaida proved herself repeatedly, her actions earning respect even from those assigned to guard her.

Marriage and Life on K’lais

Kaida’s life takes another unexpected turn when she becomes the wife and mate of Elryn Mc’narrd, binding her fate to Clan Mc’narrd and the world of K’lais.

Her skills soon becomes required. She is recruited to steal critical information—covert operations that only The Raven could execute successfully.
