The Skyships of Kalites
Kalites' skyships are a work of modern wonder. The design has been improved upon over the last few decades, moving away from the initial design of a sailing ship given the power to move through the air to sleek designs crafted specifically for cutting through the skies. The magicoengineers of Kalites' understanding of air flow and lift has grown in leaps and bounds, giving rise to several designs that would have been unthinkable 50 years ago.
Work now is focused on the most effective design for the function of the ships. However, craft designed for conflict still occupies a significant proportion of time. The greatest boon these ships are bringing is the ability to transport large volumes of goods with a significantly reduced threat of attack by risen dead or the countless other dangers that trouble the few land trains that crisscross The Maelstrom nations.
Work is currently underway to design a ship capable of carrying a significant weight of cargo, yet that does not require specialist docking arrangements to land so it would be able to travel to scattered towns and villages acting as a traveling market, agricultural goods to be sold in bulk and the settlements able to purchase the worked goods that are rarer within these outliying places. There have been some breakthroughs, vessels that can sit atop large bodies of calm water, but a vessel big enough for the design that is able to support its own weight on the ground is still a pipe dream.
While this research is still underway the Chair of Agriculture has been working with the Chair of Trade to establish a regime of building works to make rudementry docking ribs at the largest outlaying settlements to enable the ships to dock, cheaper than the traditional docking towers that have been the prevelant idea, but quicker and cheaper to build with little specialist knowledge needed, as they resemble the ribs of a ship firmly supported to act as a cradle for a docking skyship, the biggest draw back with them being they are built for a single berth of ship.
As well as the works on function of the ship a number of magicoengineers have been working on the mechanisms that keep the vessels aloft. Most ships are a complex web of enchantments that provide lift and propulsion, but these are at risk from powerful counter magics and wild magic areas, so experimentation has begun with gases and the recently discovered black powder for alternatives to the core needs of lift and propulsion.
