The legend of the Titan Slayers
The haggard elf sat in the corner of the busy tavern, nursing a drink watching the comings and going, looking for the right person to approach.
At last, they stood and walked to a young, cleaning looking group noisily talking about a successful job, "You remind me of the Titan Slayers".
Turning the young group looked over her, the damaged armour, faded livery of a town they weren't familiar with. "Me' names Syndra. Used to be a guard in Wayford, up until, well, you know what. spare us a drink and I'll tell you of the Titan Slayers"
Sitting around a large central table, drink in hand Syndra looked at the group around her and began.
"No one really knows what brought them all to Wayford, though we thank the gods they did, or things would have been so much worse for us. Bounty is the common rumour, something about killing a drake that had been sinking river barges, but me, I think's they were hunting the Slythernak right from the start. What makes me so sure? I can see you think I'm just another spinner of tails, but you see the old town's livery upon whats left of me uniform, so perhaps I do know more than your run of the mill storyteller. But I can do one better than that, I met them first when they came swooping down like avenging celestials on the Slythernak that had overrun our wagon train, weeks we'd been fighting hit and run, losing folk and caravans every hit, but they charged in, saved us, Ionia, Gustaff and myself. That great barbarians axe blade wet with their blood. He weren't called Reaper for no reason, when that axe sang death walked. Haldir Blackbow's arrows driving them down, while Qork strode to our aid, all the while mighty Erasmus's magics keeping them at bay. Once they'd smote them down they got us back to Wayford, Erasmus shouting at the town's guard to bring the captain of the guard out, for they had news and the town was a'peril. Haldir went to talk to the sheriff, they being on terms and all that, while Erasmus explained the danger facing them, prescient he was, even back then he knew the dangers coming.
They didn't stay long after warning the town, they had Slythernak to hunt, took a barge upriver to track their prey, looking for one of our caravans passengers they were, he had crucial news for them and they'd been awaiting him. Haldir Blackbow tracked 'em cross the plains, nothing could escape his keen senses. following them to the ancient fort of Alarden where a mighty battle was fought. Wise Qork leading the way while Grimm reaped his toll of them. Erasmus calling on his mighty arcane arts they found the resting place of their missing informant and extracted the message from his fallen body.
While they were on this crucial mission, the Slythernak had tried to storm Wayford, would have swept through the town, but for the warning of the Titan Slayers. we were prepared, walls manned, spikes laid out around the town walls. Fighting was hard and brutal, they had breached the walls, and we were fighting on our hope fading, but then, as things looked lost, siege towers approaching. Tell you now. thought it was the end for us, they arrived. Titan Slayers blazing in glory. Qork and Grimm clearing the path. It was like Urkest's power flowed through Grimm's axe that day. Haldir leap'd down with Erasmus into the breach to give us hope while Qork and Grimm fought on the battlements, they cleared the way to the siege bows and fired them into the siege towers. then finally Erasmus cast down a mighty ball of flames bringing death to all those that tried to gain the walls. Word had reached them that Guis was hard-pressed in town, fighting assassins who'd crept in under cover of the fighting. So on they swooped, charging into the town to hunt out those most treacherous of Slythernak.
Once they knew it was safe, and the worst of the attack thwarted they had to rush to Port Kolin. That's right, they came here to seek the aid of the great city. They knew we'd be hard-pressed and needed more aid.
It was a hard journey south, for as you know the dead walk these land and even as mighty a group as the Titan Slayers could not avoid them, many skirmishes occurred as they made their way here. Stealth was needed you see, for the Slythernak hunted them as well but the living dead can sense living blood like a hound on a trail.
Once they arrived in Port Kolin they had aid to seek for my old town and ancient knowledge to find in your great library.
While in the city an old friend of their's warned them of a newly discovered sinkhole in the broken grounds that could lead to ancient ruins, Wise Qork knew they could not risk another stumbling in there. So Haldir tracked the location of this new danger. Into this ancient place, they delved but they were not the first, and it was as the Wise Qork had feared, another less able group seeking fame had plumbed the depth but been overcome, all but their last, for this is where Uriel did join them. For in him they saw a kindred spirit. Clearing that place of the restless dead that roamed the halls, and finally facing a great fiend with whom there was a great fight. Triumphant they returned back to the city. They had warnings for our Knights of Orren, for they'd been ambushed upon leaving the ruins by the mysterious Onyx Guard. Hard fought, they'd lain in wait prepared for the Titan Slayers, ready to bring them low. Qorks divine powers had saved them many a time and weren't going to fail them now. Erasmus's magics writhing across the battlefield, while Uriel called upon his patron to grant them boon's in this most deadly of fights. With Grimm's axe singing of death, at last, they prevailed.
Warning's given to the Knights, they sought audiences with the heads of many of our great churches, seeking to bring this news to those who could help Wayford, and prepare Port Kolin for its future.
With their audiences complete and warnings given, they rode back to Wayford, for they knew time was short and we'd need their help once more. We didn't know it at the time, but the mysterious poisoning at the Goose tavern was a harbinger of most grievous times.
The Titan Slayers sought out our towns scouts, they knew the Slythernak would have been on the move and wanted to know if we were prepared. They managed to capture one of the Slythernak a mighty trick for such are the Slythernak that they'd rather throw themselves upon your blade than be taken alive. Erasmus through arcane arts pulled much information from that fell creature.
It was then that Wayford's doom was arriving for our docks and farms set ablaze, so the night sky did gleam a fell red, with ash upon the air. Once again the Titan Slayers rushed to our aid, leading us to the blazing port, but there amidst the ruins of our fair port was a demon worm of fire so great that Haldir's arrows burst aflame as they flew near it. driving them back the Titan Slayers had a hard choice to make, to fight this mighty beast or rescue the survivors of the farms. Wise Qork won through, and to the farms they rush, saving those they could from the burning shells that were left, returning them to the safety of Wayford. Uriel sensing some hidden clue in the mystery at the Goose Inn lead an investigation, and they did link it with the poisonings that had begun to occur here in Port Kolin as well, showing the greater tapestry of the fell plans of these Slythernak.
Once again the Slythernak were at our walls, but this was just a feint, to distract us from the attacks inside our walls, gods be praised the Titan Slayers were with us that night, for they stalked the streets hunting out those Slythernak that had breached our town. killing so many the streets ran slick with blood. Capturing one of these creatures Erasmus again used his mighty arts to discover how they'd breached our town while the walls stood firm. Tunnels they'd made, for the Slythernak are a subterranean race and have such skills at this that we can not fathom.
The poisoning became clear, for they'd dug into the cellars of the Goose, and placed their foul brew, The Titan Slayers sealing up this root, sought out the final location, freshly made in the streets of the town, broken up through the very cobbles themselves like it was nothing more than loose dirt. A sombre mood took our heroes for they could see the end in sight, such is the curse given to the mighty. They ventured into those black tunnels 'neath our fair town. the fighting was hard and on they pushed, killing all that stood in those places near to our town, delving deeper into ancient places that those tunnels led. They were at last overcome by the vast hordes of Slythernak that lay in wait 'neath Wayford town. No one saw that final battle, but our town was overcome with silent hush as if the very god's held their breath, and sombre mood did take us all. none knew why, till those fiends did boil up from 'neath our town. Then we did know our heroes had fallen in defiance of these Slythernak and defences of our homes."
Syndra finished the last drops of her drink in the hush of the once noisy bar, and walked out into the bustling streets of the busy docks of Port Kolin, nimbly stepping past an old man arguing with his fat orange cat.
At last, they stood and walked to a young, cleaning looking group noisily talking about a successful job, "You remind me of the Titan Slayers".
