Koranaxil
Stat block: level 22 city
The city of Koranaxil is a ramshackle collection of districts, with varying architectural styles conforming to no obvious overall design. The city is spread across the island, never truly complete, with new buildings constructed in any conceivable space, from houses on stilts and floating platforms, to carved into the sheer sides of the mountainous terrain.
Although part of the Athantian nation, the country’s influence is minimal; there is a heavy military presence but that is more to ensure this wealthy trade city doesn't fall into the hands of Kalites, whose Maelstrom city of Port Venitruum is close by. While nominally ruled over by Equestris Seris, he does so with the cooperation of the various trade houses and wealthy families that call this island home. Its winding streets and hidden plazas make Koranaxil an excellent city for all manner of clandestine dealings, many of the residents having secret docks built under their sprawling homes. Consequently, a huge variety of exotic and valuable goods flow through this trade hub, with the merchant houses often taking commissions to find unique goods. Government Population Language common (Athantian) Religions: Aneysas, Elestain, Mailiness, Sheline, Eris Threats Other characteristics *Fortified isle and port trade hub, closest to the Maelstom* Significant NPCs

Demographics
Like much of Athantia, the largest percentage of ancestries is a mix of Human, Elven, and Gnomish, but there is a significant population of Tengu, and a surprising number of Conrasu on the island, though almost any ancestry can be found withing the sprawl of Koranaxil.
Socially, Koranaxil's population is split into a number of small noble families below the Seris's, the thriving scholarly population, the major trading houses and guild members, and an overwhelming number of peasantry with no significant education or wealth.

Government
Equestris Seris rules Koranaxil, but his control really only extends as far as the military protection of the city; the trading houses have the controlling sway when it comes to any laws that could impact them.
Industry & Trade
Koranaxil is second only to Port Kolin in trading power; though significantly smaller in size, it is well placed for easy trade with Bretawald, the Athantian mainland, and Idria. As such, goods from most nations readily flow through this trading hub. There is also a significant presence of Athantian scholars within the city thanks to its numerous private libraries and collectors of rare tomes, so it is not uncommon for those looking for obscure historical knowledge to come here and pay The Sklorarix to find answers for them.
There is also a small but significant industry of invention: away from the rigid rules of the Athantian mainland. Highly educated scholars have found the skills within the peasantry most valuable and several partnerships have emerged creating wonderous items.

Guilds and Factions
House Ioeril:
They trade primarily in foodstuffs; they import the vast majority of what feeds the city but also have a significant trade in more exotic and rarer foods.
House Nerahiss: Traders in worked and unworked wood and stone, and are also commissioned for the construction of many of the more opulent building construction, as they employ most of the talented architects, stonemasons, carpenters and run a guild or labourers.
House Volunio:
Own portions of many of the shops within Koranaxil and head up the merchants' guild, which oversees the trade agreements between the many merchants who own or run stores on Koranaxil.
The Sklorarix: The guild of scribes, caligraphers, cartographers, researchers, librarians, historians. They are a surprisingly influential guild, operating as an independent party when new trade deals are struck. Recording the agreement down to the tiniest details and providing precedence for any form of agreement, they know Athantian law down to the most obscure bylaws. They also provide training and advisors to the noble houses of both Koranaxil and many Athantian mainland families.
