Kelmorn

Kelmorn Duggluneder [early-20s/M/Gnome]   Born to a single mother in Toregard, father had disappeared before birth   Mother had been told she had latent magical powers, but they never manifested   In an attempt to pass this gift on, she researched alternative sources of powers   During her pregnancy, she sought out and accepted the bite of a vampire   This reckless act caused Kel's father to walk out on the family, branding her insane   Kel was thus born as Dhampir, a product of a Gnomish mother and Vampiric father   In his youth, Kel also displayed no innate gift of magic   His mother was driven to insanity through the gravity and selfishness of her own actions   Kel was thus abandoned into the care of a borstal   Kel's mother then disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again   Kel was abused by carers and peers due to his lineage, being branded an outcast/monstrosity   Kel's life in the borstal was traumatic, and he sought solace in isolation, spending much of his time alone in his room   It was here that he first identified an inkling of magical ability   Sitting alone, eyes closed, he would come to and discover small changes in his surroundings   Kel wanted to hide this [he's ostracised enough already], but found that he couldn't manifest anything in the company of others regardless   As a product of his abuse, he decided to try to harness the oddities that came to him in isolation   Focusing his mind, he found he could rearrange his possessions across his desk, over short distances   With practice, he could levitate small objects, such as the bread he was served for lunch   Over time, this developed into being able to manipulate heavier objects, and even conjure some basic illusions   At the age of 18, Kel was removed from care and told to make his own way in the world   Took up menial jobs, trying his best to blend in with the townsfolk   Kel regularly wore loose fitting, hooded robes to try best to hide his features   A local decided to start an argument in a tavern, referencing Kel's lineage and suggesting there's no room in Toregard for his kind   Things escalated, and a tankard was hurled from nothing across the table, knocking the other man out cold   Locals were aghast, choosing to shrink away rather than engage   Kel was taken aback by this, as it was the first instance of his power manifesting in a public setting   In reality, he enjoyed this; finally being able to retaliate without having to rely on absent physicality   Kel then tried to harness these abilities in public unconfrontationally   Mostly trying to make his jobs easier through mental manipulation of the physical   This led to refinement of his powers, being able to evoke magic on demand   Soon after, anonymous notes were passed into Kel's residence suggesting he leave Toregard or face the consequences   Fearing for his own life at the hands of a mob, Kel hitched a lift out of town on a wagon   At a traveller's rest in Stromvar, Kel was again challenged for his appearance   Kel showed restraint and did not escalate the situation, as he did not want to become stuck in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to go and noone to take him   A jibe about "going to live with the other monstrosities" alerted Kel to New Wayford, where he sought transport as close as a trade convoy would go   Kel sought accomodation in exchange for menial work, as he'd done in Toregard   Kel thus accepted his new fate, a life among the risen dead   He soon befriended Reverend Alemara, and confided in them   Through mentorship and advice, Kel not only developed his own telekinetic powers, but unlocked long-buried abilities beyond what he'd experienced to date   Kel's mother's "latent magical abilities" had come through a bloodline of Imperial sorcerors, skipping her generation but bestowing Kel with spellcasting abilities   She led him down the path of Dalphus, mental manipulation and striking terror into the hearts of the weak   Kel soon found himself supporting hunting and gathering expeditions, accepting a role as a local magic specialist aiding the more physical citizens   This further refined Kel's abilities, leading to him supplementing his powers with magic to support and refresh those around him   Motivation:   Survival at any costs   Murder is not off the table, but sometimes it's better to make strong friends   Establishing New Wayford's place in the world   Exiled from his hometown, Kel wants to build a community and prove the worth of the undead   Be this by diplomacy or conquest, he's not particularly fussed   Displaying no weakness   Shaped by his outcast upbringing, Kel would not kowtow to anyone regarded as weaker than himself   If Kel thinks he is outmatched, he is more than happy to act duplicitous to curry favour and spare himself   Calmness in control   Kel would much rather exert control/domination over those he fights   A dominated or scared target is an obeying target   Insatiable urge to grow in power   More domination/control, a growing enjoyment in others being intimidated by his presence
