Church of Hiatea (Hee-AH-tee-uh)

Hiatea is one of the goddesses with in the giants Ordining. In the Land of Tiefebene she is worshiped by even the non giants as their patron and protector. Her symbol is a flaming spear and she is the neutral good goddess of agriculture, childbirth, hunting, and nature.   Her portfolio and actions during the convergence have endured her to many of the common folk. Goliaths and Firbogs make up the majority of her high priest though any can serve in the clergy.

Mythology & Lore

The land of Tiefebene was largely protected from the ravages of the other gods during The year of strife. This was largely because of the actions of the giants and their goddess Hiatea. In the time before the convergence she sent omens to her high priests, signs and symbols dancing in their fires. Theses omens directed them to gather the giant clans and prepare for the coming night of darkness, when the banished gods would return to exert their will directly on the land and its people once more. They did as she commanded and in the days leading up to the night of darkness they held a great hunt. In those days, for the first time in remembered history the earth shook with the footsteps of the giants as they hunted an ancient dragon and historic foe across the land.   On the dawn after the night of darkness they offered up the remains of the dragon on a great bonfire and called out to Hiatea to protect the lands and their people from the machinations of the other gods. Hearing her people cry she appeared before them, and agreed to help them. She sat down among the floating and broken land known as Cloudia and began reshaping the earth with the loving care of a potter working the clay. to protect her people while she worked she allowed them sanctuary in her home in Jotenheim   She scooped up the land between Cloudia and Alulia and formed a great mountain range, fortifying it with the bones of the offered dragon. Each section of the mountains was constructed useing a part of the dragon and that is where the ranges got their names. It's head was used in The Dragons Tooth, it's body formed The Dragon Spine it's tail in The Sinuous and it's wings were worked in to The Sky Islands along with floating earth and the essence of the clouds.   After a week she had finished her work and laid along the ground to rest and more easily speak with her people, who were returning to their new home. Where her head rested became the Province of Handeln, the seat of communication with the outside world and between the giant clans and their people. Where her chest and body lay became Karminroot the most fertile plains of all the Cloudian continent. Where her legs laid great forest grew up giving rise to the great forest and what would become the province of Wlad Boden. Lastly where she rested her feet, the water rose up to soothe and clean them forming the marshlands that would become the territory of Sumpf.   She rested for two days communing and celebrating with her people before returning to her home in Jotenheim.

Worship

Weekly Holy Day: Fireday A day of rest to enjoy the fruits of the weeks labors. Many will gather at the temple bringing a portion of the weeks bounty to share with the community in a large potluck type gathering. The Mother/ Father of the Flock will often give a blessing for the week to those gathered and weddings are often preformed during theses gatherings.   Daily Worship: Working to the benefit of your community is considered holy to the followers of Hiatea. So a hard days work and self improvement are acts of worship. Most followers keep an ever burning torch in a prominent place in their homes and a portion of every harvest or hunt is set aside to be given to the temple.
Festival days:
The Red Moon Hunt: On the day after first full Morigan Moon of each month a ceremonial hunt is organized. All able bodied members of the community are welcome to join in this hunt that is led by the Sentinals. That evening is filled with feasting and merry making and a good hunt is seen as a positive omen.   The Great Hunt: 4/1-4/9 The first nine days of Flocktime are dedicated to the hunting of a particularly fearsome beast that the Sentinals have chosen, preferably some sort of dragon or dragon-like creature. All able bodied members of the community are invited though this hunt is much more dangerous than the monthly hunts. On the Ninth day the spoils from the hunt are sacrificed to the goddess and a grand festival is kicked off.   The week of reshaping: 4/9-4/17 Beginning with the festival at the end of The Great Hunt the week long celebration of the Reshaping is a time of renewal and new beginnings. Each day during the week large community meals are held and the temple will offer services for free. Activities during the week involve: a ritual cleansing of the body, tests of strength, spending time in the wilds, Weddings, Alliances, Contracts and agreements. This is seen as a good time to break new ground on a building or start new ventures. Children born during this time are seen as blessed by the goddess. Those wishing to join the priesthood are given a series of trials during this week to see if they are worthy. The last two days of the festival are rest days.

Even these basic cantirps are done as a ritual for these priests.

Sects

There are currently two main sects in the priesthood of Hiatea the Priests of the Steadings and the Sentinel Preists.
The Priests of the Steadings   The Priests of the Steadings are the community priests who remain in a settlement and oversee the agricultural activities as well as the education and protection of the children. There is at least one church in each settlement with larger ones often having at least one per district. These are the priests of the every-man and are often prominent figures in their communities. They are the ones consulted in matters of the family and who preform the rites over the lands before planting and harvest.   Symbol: The flaming spear with it's point in the ground and the flame at the end of the hilt like a torch.   Temples: Their temples tend to be somewhat spear shaped, a long building that houses the school, dorms for the priests, rooms for medical care and serves as a safe house, and a V shaped section that is used as a place of worship. The Tip of the V often holds a sacred flame that is kept burning and it tends to have a very open construction.   Priests: Priests can be both male and female though there is a predominance of females in the order. Each major temple is led by a high priest(ess) who is the Grand Mother/ Father of the temple, The Grandmother/Father is usually a full Cleric of Hiaea and treated with much respect by the community they serve. Under the Grandmother/father are the Mothers and Fathers of the flock. Theses are the priests of smaller temples in large communities or the apprentice of the Grand Mother/Father in smaller communities. This is who most people would interact with when requesting guidance or service from the temple. They can offer minor magical services as needed and are the ones who regularly address the people. Lastly are the Brothers and Sisters of the flock Theses are the people who provide basic services and care for the children. They have pledged service to Hiatea or are serving the church as payment. They handle most of the mundane day to day of the temple. All who serve as Grand Mothers/fathers or Fathers/Mothers must be skilled in surviving the wilderness and hunting, when they become unable to they retire but can continue to serve the temple as Brothers and Sisters if they choose.   Services offered by Steadings Priests: Services can be paid for in coin, services or trade goods

The Sentinel Priests The sentinel priests are the priests in charge of protecting their community and the wild lands surrounding it. They are more common in smaller communities ,where they share territory with the Steadings priests. They are a martial group that focuses on strength and survival, seeing them selves as the Hunting and wild nature aspects of their goddess. In addition to protecting the area around their community they make sure that the wild order of nature is not being infringed upon by the people. They are neutral like their goddess and favor the natural order and balance over the more artificial order of civilization.   Symbol: A flaming spear, upright with the flame at the tip, in front of a wall that is covered in vines.   Priests: The Priests of the Sentinel order as known as Wild Mothers/Fathers and tend to be a mixture of rangers and clerics. The ones still in training are known as the Wild Sons/ Daughters. While all Priests of Hiatea value strength and survival skills, the Sentinels dedicate themselves to them. Removing threats to their community, helping lost travelers, protecting the wild spaces are the activities done by the Sentinels. When they are no longer capable of hunting or surviving the wilderness they retire, some decide to join the ranks of the Brothers and Sisters of the Flock, others retire and take one final journey in to the wilds never returning home.   Temples: They often share a temple space with the Steading sect, but if asked will say that the best temple to Hiatea is the wilderness not some building.   Services offered by Sentinel Priests:
  • Land survey
  • Removal of dangerous creatures
  • Escort through the wilderness
  • Search and rescue
