Dragonborn

Native to the land of Ryoukuni, dragonborn believe themselves to to be descendants of heavenly dragons that descended to the earth many eons ago. Their culture is that of a strict caste system, with honor being the must important virtue a dragonborn can have. The life of a dragonborn is focussed entirely on death. How best to die, how your death serves the clan, the family, one's master. Honourable death is the highest acheivement a dragonborn warrior can recieve.

Ryukatana

Because dragonborn scales don't decay anywhere near as rapidly as flesh does, dragonborn are not buried in coffins, but instead simply placed in the ground in a shallow grave, with only a sword to serve as a grave marker. In the case of warrior dragonborn, the place they are buried is often the very spot they fell. The sword in question is called a Ryukatana, and is gifted to every dragonborn at birth. This sword represents one's entire life, there to be a tool to be used when circumstances are dire, and ultimately be the only thing that remains of oneself when they die.  It is representative of the fierce fighting spirit and draconic power that dwells within each dragonborn. A dragonborn carries their Ryukatana with them their whole life, each one of them custom made and entirely unique. To lose, damage, or break a Ryukatana is the greatest shame of any dragonborn, especially samurai (the warrior caste of Ryoukuni). A dragonborn seperated from their Ryukatana will stop at nothing to get it back, and those who have their Ryukatana broken often ritually commit suicide, resigning themselves to an afterlife of unrest.
The attitude dragonborn have towards their Ryukatana differs greatly among each individual. The concept of carrying something so precious and yet so useful has yielded multiple schools of thought. Some never dare draw their sacred blade, afraid that accumulating even the tiniest knick or scratch will have dire ramifications on their mortal soul. Others proudly brandish it at every opportunity, after all, when battle begins, one often places their life on the line, so why not do so with the weapon that is considered their actual life? Others still take solemn vows to only draw their Ryukatana for specific purposes, such as defending one's own honour, protecting loved ones, or destroying evil doers. These vows become so strong that they often manifest as power, making dragonborn paladins fairly common.
Despite their reserved demeanour, dragonborn are fiercely emotional creatures. Their rage, joy, and other strong emotions are what fuels their famous breath attacks and connects them strongly to magic. Because of this, a dragonborn's deep connection with their Ryukatana causes it to take on some minor magical properties reflective of their owner as said owner ages. These powers can even change if the dragonborn in question undergoes a significant personality shift. Very occassionally, a dedicated dragonborn warrior's bond with their sword becomes so powerful that it unlocks immense magical powers within the blade. Those who have acheived such mastery are known as Kensei, or Sword Saints. Those who have dedicated themselves to mastery of the blade often say that each Ryukatana has their own temperament and personality, and that learning to work with your sword's personality is the first step to true mastery.
The lands of Ryuokuni are positivly littered with Ryukatana, their tips stuck in the ground, marking the resting place of corpses that have long since decayed into nothing. Despite the long history of civil wars on Ryoukuni, many of these swords have been left, untouched on enemy clan grounds for centuries. To disturb the resting place of another dragonborn is the most unforgivable of crimes on Ryukuni, as it is believed doing so will sever the sword's master from the afterlife, leaving them to wander as vengeful tormented spirits. Likewise, it is also strictly forbidden to interfere with another's Ryukatana, living or dead. Even touching it is considered a grave insult, and requires the express permission of the owner and may only be done so for as much is necessary and no longer. Permission to touch a Ryukatana is so rare that even family members and spouses are very rarely permitted to handle another's sword. Using another's Ryukatana for combat is practically unheard of in dragonborn culture, but those who do share swords are considered to be spiritually intertwined for the rest of eternity.
