Birth Hunts

or "Soul Preparation"

The practice of choosing the animal that you most wish your unborn child to be like (physically and instinctively, as per the Cycle of Self ) is known as Shadow selection, and many cultures go so far as to seek out and kill this animal soon before or during the birth of their child in order to increase the chances of that Shadow becoming their child's Spirit.

Components and tools

The particular creature is pure choice, as like as it possesses either a Shadow or a Spirit- any creature which can experience the world- though the overwhelming majority of birth hunters choose a Shadow creature, due to the fact that killing any Spirit creature is tantamount to (or is, period) murder. Common creatures and their valued aspects are as follows:
  • Ink Bird - Artistic, choice of those wishing apprenticeship for their child
  • Ok - Hardworking, choice of those wishing field labour for their child
  • Dragyon - Mind-bending, choice of those wishing power of word for their child
  • Vyspen - Musical, choice of those wishing an ear for music for their child
  • Arimen - Seaworthy, choice of those wishing a life at sea for their child
  • Jespen - Fleet of foot, choice of those wishing adventure for their child
  • Zvien - Mischievous, choice of those who simply want a non-evil shade for their child

Participants

The only requisite for a birth hunter is that it is someone who truly loves the unborn child.

Observance

This practice is observed in preparation of a birth, usually happening when the mother is within a month of labor, starts having contractions, or is baring her child, depending on how readily available the creature that the hunter wants to kill is.
