The Roofless Tavern
Situated in the town of Sandbank The Roofless tavern is probably the most famous building in the town, and the one building that has never been finished, nor will it ever be finished. Sandbank has suffered a series of freak accidents since its first construction a hundred years or so ago, and the tavern has come to play a central role is this side of the towns history.
Hatham Strathsclide was one of the first settlers to arrive on the island and after a few years helping to get the town underway began construction of what was to be the first proper tavern in the settlement. During the freak storm which struck about ten years later, while most of his tavern remained standing though damaged, his roof was completely destroyed. He decided this time around he would a better roof and ordered some special wood. Just as he was about to begin construction of his new roof, a fire ripped through the town and his precious wood he had waited so long for was destroyed in the blaze along with half his tavern.
Not to be deterred he once again rebuilt, along with the rest of the town and once again sent off for the wood he wanted. Having once more waited several months his wood finally arrived and he began work once again. He had nearly finished the roof, when a giant crab was driven onto the island by some hunters once more destroyed all his hard work.
By this point he began to think that perhaps his tavern was cursed never to be finished, and it just so happened that many of the townsfolk agreed with him, and when he suggested for a third time that he was going to send for more wood, the townsfolk banned him, saying that it would just bring another disaster upon them. So to this day the Roofless tavern still has no permanent roof. Its current covering is the shell of the giant crab which invaded their town.
