Furling
Furlings are little crustacean creatures with insect-like wings that live inside active Fire mounts. They have small but powerful claws capable of breaking down small rocks, which they use to feed on solidified lava.
Most furlings live is small colonies carved at the inner sides of a caldera, and swoop down to feed whenever an otterling is done with their hot bath. That said, furlings are also fearless and friendly to creatures much larger to them. One can often find them playing with otterling children, chasing each other and playfully nibbling their fur. Some even end up living permanently with an otterling companion. After all, eating is much easier if you live right next to your food.
When an otterling steps out of a lava lake, most of the lava slips off their fur, but some stays and eventually solidifies. As soon as they see this happen, furlings fly down and start breaking down the solidified lava to feed themselves. The otterlings enjoy this symbiotic relationship too, as have small volcanic stones stuck to one's fur can be very uncomfortable.
Anatomy and behavior
The body of a furling is similar to that of a lobster in overall shape. They have three pair of legs, a pair of crab-like claws, and a pair of wings similar to that of a dragonfly. Their eyes are large and beady, sitting at the sides of a rounded head. They grow in size with age, and adult furlings can be anywhere from 5 cm to 30 cm long. Most furlings live is small colonies carved at the inner sides of a caldera, and swoop down to feed whenever an otterling is done with their hot bath. A symbiotic relationship
While their favorite food is recently solidified lava, furlings are not fireproof. Instead, they have a mutually beneficial relationship with Otterlings, the cheerful people of the fire mounts, known for their ability to swim in lava lakes. When an otterling steps out of a lava lake, most of the lava slips off their fur, but some stays and eventually solidifies.
