Weapon Proficiency

A weapon proficiency feat defines the types of weapons the character is adept at employing, these proficiencies are broken down into the following groups.

Simple Weapons

Benefit: The character makes attack rolls with simple weapons normally.

Normal: A character without this feat takes the –4 nonproficient penalty when making attacks with simple weapons.

Special: All characters except for druids, monks, and wizards are automatically proficient with all simple weapons. They need not select this feat.

Simple Weapon Examples: Gauntlet, Unarmed Strike, Dagger, Mace, Sickle, Club, Morningstar, Shortspear, Quarterstaff, Spear, Crossbow, Dart, Javelin, Sling, Pepper Spray, Taser.

Personal Firearms

Handguns and long-arms are personal firearms. A personal firearm is any firearm designed to be carried and used by a single person.

Benefit: The character can fire any personal firearm without penalty.

Normal: Characters without this feat take a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with personal firearms.

Martial Weapon

Choose a type of martial weapon. You understand how to use that type of martial weapon in combat.

Benefit: You make attack rolls with the selected weapon normally.

Normal: When using a weapon with which you are not proficient, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls.

Special: You can gain Martial Weapon Proficiency multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

Martial Weapon Examples: Axe (throwing), Hammer, Handaxe, Kukri, Sap, Sword (short or long), Battleaxe, Flail, Rapier, Scimitar, Trident, Warhammer, Halberd.

Exotic Weapon

Choose a type of exotic weapon. You understand how to use that type of exotic weapon in combat.

Modern exotic weapons are broken down into the following groups:

  • Machine gun - both light and heavy machine guns.
  • Rocket launcher - Hand held rocket launchers such as the Bazooka.
  • Grenade launcher - Rifle launched grenades or grenades launched by a specialist hand held gun.
  • Projector - Simplistic bomb throwers.
  • Cannon - All large calibre cannons including howitzers.
  • Missile launcher - Large non-hand held missile/rocket launchers.
  • Mortar - Light and heavy mortars.

Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1 (plus Str 13 for bastard sword or dwarven waraxe).

Benefit: You make attack rolls with the weapon normally.

Normal: A character who uses a weapon with which he or she is not proficient takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls.

Special: You can gain Exotic Weapon Proficiency multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of exotic weapon. Proficiency with the bastard sword or the dwarven waraxe has an additional prerequisite of Str 13.

Exotic Melee Weapon Examples: Karma, Nunchaku, Sai, Sword (bastard or two-bladed), Whip, Net, Shuriken.
