Kraftfahrzeug 11 – Kfz11
Before standardiseing on a set of military vehicles the Wehrmacht made use of commercial vehicles modified for military use. During the 1920s and 1930s 3.5-liter V-8 engines were fitted to Auto-Union/Horch Typ 830 vehicles, plus modifications to the rear-axle to improve cross-country performance. With an open toped body the vehicles were put into service as prime movers for light infantry guns, some even included radio sets for communications. Signal troops made use of an enclosed van style of body as a mobile radio truck, with the enclosed body sometimes made of wood. Some models were even modified as staff cars with glossy black sheet metal bodies.
