Kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen I

The Panzer I saw conversion into a leichte (Funk) Panzerwagen mit Sonderaufbau - or light radio tank with special superstructure. This conversion replaced the small turret with a fixed superstructure that included a number of vision ports for the commander. To create extra room within the vehicle the sides of the superstructure were raised, this helped to add an extra crew member to the vehicle, along with extra radio equipment.

Access into the vehicle was provided by a commander hatch on the superstructure roof, while the radio operator and driver made use of a hatch on the left side of the superstructure.

Although the twin machinegun turret had been removed, a ball mounted machinegun was mounted in the replacement turret structure, this MG34 was operated by the commander. The ball mounting permitted a 45 degree field of fire to the front of the vehicle.
