The German army was active throughout Europe and on into Russia, with the Afrika Korps joining Italian troops active in North Africa.
German Afrika Korps: Equipment issue to troops in North Africa was essentially the same compared to troops in the European theatre of war, except for a few particularities. Steel helmets were not issued in great numbers in North Africa, instead, the Pith Helmet was standard issue and preferred over the steel helmet in hot conditions as it provided better protection against the sun. Also, soldiers in the Afrika Korps were issued with two water canteens instead of one.
