Austria
On the 12th of March 1938 the German Heer marched into the Federal State of Austria unopposed while the general population were enthusiastic for unification with Germany. Austria was thus annexed by Nazi Germany one day before a general referendum was to be held on wether Austria should remain a sovereign nation or seek unification with Germany. This moment became known as the Anschluss or Anschluß Österreichs, meaning "to join" or "connection" in German.
On the 10th of April 1938 a plebiscite was held seeking public approval for the Anschluss. Even thought there was enthusiastic support for the Anschluss the plebiscite was not a secret ballot, resulting in threats and coercion by pro-Nazi groups who manipulated the vote to achive a 99.7% approval for the Anschluss.
950,000 Austrians fought for Nazi Germany during the Second World War and Austria remained a part of what was called Greater Germany until the 27th of April 1945 when Allied-occupied Austria declared independence from Nazi Germany.
