Betwixt and Between

This world is just like ours, in many respects. The languages spoken, and the places, are for the most part the same. On the surface, it is very similar. But only on the surface. Underneath that thin veneer, hides magic, libraries that are a cover for 'good' assassins, and the Dark and Bright Courts of the Sidhe, not to mention all other manner of creatures of magic and Faerie. Things here are rarely exactly what they seem, and it is this world that Carys Jones must find her place.

Carys Jones has always known she was a little different than everyone else she knew. She has been hiding her pointed ears with her hair, and wearing contacts to hide her cat-pupiled eyes as long as she can remember, at her mother's insistence. She has always been able to sense energy in ways others can't and feels other's pain as if it were her own. Her mother has refused to give her any explanation. Carys is fairly sure it has to do with her father, but as far as she knows, he died before she was born. Carys finds some answers, but more questions, when is hired by the Oroboros Library, the local branch of which is reopening after nearly a hundred years.

The Orboros LibrariesOroboros Libraries are an offshoot of the Ordo Venatorum de Magicis Malignis, and exist not simply as a collection of old books, but also as a nuetral ground for the various magical communities to gather, communicate, and share knowledge. The Librarians are expected not just to file books, but also serve as magical marshals for the area surrounding their library, and Carys eagerly starts learning all she can about a side of the world she never knew existed.

All is not well, however. If Carys Unseelie relatives find out she exists, they are likely to try and capture or kill her, and there is a spell blocking her ability to actually use the energy she can sense. Throw in magical communities that are not exactly delighted to be policed by outsiders after being left to their own devices for so long, and you have a recipe for trouble.
