Lledbeast

A lledbeast, sometimes called a familiar, is a lesser form of monster that feeds off of refined magic. They are created when a small animal is caught up in a magic whorl, but they fall out before they fully turn into a monster. Mages often take them on as aids in their tasks in exchange for feeding them.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Familiars share all of their biological traits with the animal they were originally. However, sometimes that magic also enhances their natural abilities. A bird might become a faster flier or a cat might gain sharper claws. In general though, they are nearly identical to a normal animal.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The only consistent change that familiars experience from their magical transformation is that the lledbeast can no longer eat normal food for its original species. Instead, the lledbeast can only eat magical energy, especially magic that has been refined by being manipulated.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Familiars are smarter than the mundane version, able to listen to and understand the complex commands that mages give them.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

When an animal becomes a lledbeast, it gains the ability to see sources of magical power, especially individuals with the ability to manipulate magic.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Lledbeasts are often taken in by mages of various ancestries, denoting them as a familiar. The small size and enhanced intelligence of the familiars make them useful to mages in both research and travel, along with their ability to see wellsprings of magic energy. In exchange, mages act as a food source for the familiar, feeding them refined magic through their manipulations at least once a day, sometimes more.
