The Veil
The Veil is a realm that defies mortal comprehension, a neutral space where chaos and purpose intertwine in a delicate balance. It exists outside the boundaries of the Celestial, Infernal, and Terrestrial Realms, serving as a liminal bridge between life, death, and eternity. The Veil is not merely a void but a realm teeming with its own version of vitality.
The Veil is a realm of profound symbolism, representing the space between life and death, order and chaos, light and darkness. It serves as a mirror for the fears and uncertainties of mortals, reflecting their struggle to find meaning in a world where everything is transient. The Veil’s neutrality challenges the dichotomy of good and evil, offering a space where purpose and balance take precedence over morality.
The Veil is more than just a bridge between realms; it is a world unto itself, rich with mystery and purpose. Its shifting geography, complex ecosystem, and unsettling atmosphere make it a place of both terror and wonder. To traverse The Veil is to confront the very essence of existence, where every shadow holds a story and every misty tendril whispers a secret. It is a realm that demands respect and humility, for to underestimate The Veil is to risk being consumed by it.
Geography
The geography of The Veil is both surreal and ever-changing, a reflection of its chaotic neutrality. Vast plains of swirling mist stretch endlessly, broken only by jagged outcroppings of blackened stone that seem to emerge from the void itself. These outcroppings form natural landmarks within The Veil, such as towering spires, crumbling cliffs, and labyrinthine valleys, though their exact locations often shift and change.
The Veil also contains rivers of liquid shadow that flow silently through the mists, their currents carrying fragments of lost souls. These rivers occasionally converge into vast, still pools where The Unseen and other creatures gather. Some regions of The Veil are dominated by dense forests of petrified trees, their twisted, skeletal forms resembling the agony of forgotten memories.
At its edges, The Veil blurs into nothingness, a swirling vortex of mist and shadow that marks the boundary between realms. To cross this threshold is to face the judgment of the Dread Knights, who ensure that only those with purpose may pass.
Ecosystem
The Veil's ecosystem is a finely tuned cycle of consumption and renewal. Every being within The Veil serves a purpose, contributing to the realm's balance. The SoulEaters consume fragmented souls, metabolising them into the mist that blankets The Veil. This mist, in turn, sustains creatures like the Vesperlights, which draw energy from its ambient presence to guide travelers.
The Wraithkin and Vestiges provide the raw materials for this cycle, their fading essences forming the fragments consumed by SoulEaters. Even the more powerful entities, such as the Dread Knights and The Forsaken, play a role in maintaining The Veil's order, ensuring that its sanctity is upheld.
The ecosystem is not one of harmony but of necessity. Each being acts according to its purpose, with no regard for morality or emotion. This impartiality is what defines The Veil and allows it to function as a realm of balance and neutrality.
Climate
The climate of The Veil is oppressive and otherworldly, dominated by a pervasive mist that shrouds everything in an eerie half-light. The mist is cold and damp, clinging to the skin like a second layer. It carries the faint scent of decay, though some travelers claim to detect fleeting hints of otherworldly fragrances, such as the sweetness of forgotten dreams or the bitterness of unspoken regrets.
The Veil is devoid of wind or weather, its atmosphere unnervingly still. Yet, the mist itself seems alive, swirling and shifting in response to the movements of its inhabitants. In some regions, the mist thickens to the point of complete obscurity, creating a suffocating darkness that even the glow of Vesperlights struggle to penetrate.
Occasionally, flashes of light or ripples of sound disturb the stillness, echoing across the realm like distant thunder. These phenomena are believed to be the result of collisions between Vestiges or the movements of powerful beings like the Companions of Death.
Fauna & Flora
Life in The Veil is sparse and otherworldly, reflecting the realm's eerie and neutral nature. Towering forests of petrified trees dot the landscape, their bark blackened and twisted into grotesque, skeletal forms. These trees bear no leaves or fruit, yet faint light emanates from their hollow cores, as though infused with the energy of the Veil itself.
Shadowy vines creep along the jagged outcroppings and mist-covered ground, curling and writhing as if alive. These vines react subtly to the presence of beings, reaching out as though searching for warmth or life. Scattered among the darkness, faintly glowing fungi cling to rocks and cavernous surfaces, their luminescence casting a dim, spectral light into the mist.
The Veil is home to a variety of creatures, each serving a specific role in the realm’s balance. Among these are:
- The Wraithkin: The fading remnants of forgotten souls, Wraithkin drift aimlessly through the mist, their presence a solemn reminder of the transient nature of memory.
- The Stricken: Spirits trapped in grief, their forms warped by sorrow and bound to the Sisters of the Shroud. They wander The Veil, embodying the stages of loss.
- Vesperlights: Tiny, glowing entities formed from the mist itself, these beings act as impartial guides, leading travelers to their destined paths.
- The Forsaken: Broken remnants of celestial or infernal beings, exiled to The Veil and marked by their resentment and fragments of former glory.
- SoulEaters: Scavengers that consume soul fragments, metabolizing them into the mist that sustains The Veil’s ecosystem.
- Dread Knights: Towering, hooded wardens of The Veil, riding ember-eyed horses. They enforce the realm’s sanctity, consuming any who breach its laws.
