Spire Wyverns (Spier Wiv-Rns)
Basic Information
Anatomy
Spire Wyverns are a small type of wyvern (a dragon with only hind legs), standing at 6 feet tall and with an eight-foot wingspan. They are commonly lime green, or green-yellow depending on the acidity. Generally, the more acid a spire wyvern has, the more green it is. They have long, twisting horns atop their heads, and claws up to 5 inches in length.
Biological Traits
There are two subspecies of Spire Wyverns, which are Southern Spire Wyverns, and Northern Spire Wyverns. Southern Spire Wyverns generally live longer and are more active. They also hunt in larger pyres and are more heat-resistant. The reason for these traits is that they closer to the Plateau of Sands, which is very hot. Although the mountain is still cold on the southern side, they receive longer summers and fewer blizzards. Northern Spire Wyverns, on the other hand, are opposites of their southern brethren. They live shorter lives, are more lethargic hunt in smaller pyres, and are more adapted to the colder weather than the heat of the Plateau of Sands.
Growth Rate & Stages
Spire Wyverns typically take 60 years to mature, and have a lifespan of 300 years. From the years of 0-16, Spire Wyverns are considered Wyrmlings. From 16-60, they are considered young Spire Wyverns. From 60-250, they are adult Spire Wyverns. And finally, from 250-300, they are Ancient Wyverns.
Ecology and Habitats
Spire Wyverns live in the cold of Golden Spire, and have adapted to the cold. They nest inside the mountain during blizzards, and during summertime are particularly active and swoop down to feed on the citizens of Kiamaco.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Spire Wyverns are carnivores, and as such, hunt primarily medium-sized animals. These animals can range from humans to Cabelas. They hunt in pyres of 4-6, usually with an alpha. They store their food in the cold of Golden Spire, to preserve it.
Biological Cycle
Spire Wyverns are particularly active during the summer months, and lethargic during winter. During autumn, they gorge themselves as much as possible so they don't have to exert as much energy during winter. During winter, they primarily limit themselves to the Golden Spire and hunt Gravel Goats & Frost Wolves.
Behaviour
Spire Wyverns hunt in pyres of 4-6 and are very social creatures, commonly displaying this through their loud screeches and growling. They use these sounds to conversate with one another, and each wyvern even has its own unique "name", or sound that is associated with that wyvern.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Pyres usually have an alpha Spire Wyvern, which is the most powerful of the pyre. Below the alpha is the beta, which usually is the alpha's mate, similar to wolves. The rest of the pyre operates equally.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Wyverns are commonly hunted for their meet by exotic dragon hunters of Kiamaco and Stabaki, which is sold for high prices on the market.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Spire Wyverns are found exclusively on Golden Spire, which gives them their namesake. People often believe they are also found in western Kiamaco & Stabaki, but they standardly just come down to these areas to feed.
Average Intelligence
Spire Wyverns are relatively intelligent creatures, and display this in several ways:
- Spire Wyverns use pack tactics, which only intelligent creatures have exhibited. They surround prey to trap it and work together to hunt.
- Spire Wyverns have a large capacity for problem-solving, which has been witnessed several times throughout recent years.
- Spire Wyverns can also adapt to their surroundings- as demonstrated when mining operations start in Golden Spire, the wyverns adapt their hunting schedules to accommodate the new operations.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Spire Wyverns have squinty green eyes, with thin pupils like a cat. They have night vision and a seeing range of roughly 6 miles. They have no ears, and cannot hear. They also have an extremely strong sense of smell and can smell things from up to 20 miles away. They cannot feel the sense of touch, because they lack skin.
