Lost Eden
Eden was a very ambitious project, the brainchild of a handful of major space companies with endorsement from a coalition of governments, to establish a base and ultimately a civilization on Mars.
We were so close to being able to create a true second Earth over there, the air was nearly breathable through our terraforming efforts, and water was finally self-sustainable.
When the plague struck, communications told of a panic in the colony, people making accusations at each other that they brought the plague to the colony when something as simple as a cold swept through the populace. Records that Syneth has dug up show no mention of the plague ever affecting the colony, at least until we lost communications with them in 2179, meaning that the fall of the colony was likely due to some kind of mass hysteria.
My theory is that somehow in the chaos, the air filtration system was damaged beyond repair, and the colony suffocated all at once, which would explain why our comms ended so abruptly, but the real reason we will never know unless we physically go there.
