Sunchasers

Adventurous Hearts

Following the Invasion of the Enmanari, the connection between the surface of Myrengol and the Underdark regions has strengthened significantly. Whilst the people of the surface always knew that there were subterranean civilisations (and vice versa), the Drow city of Mazzogaraniz and Myrengol believed one another to be mythical despite being less than a hundred miles from another. Even now, when large caravans can freely travel between the two metropolises, most citizens will never step foot in the other city. Amongst the surface dwellers, the Underdark is an intimidating place rife with danger. To the subterranean folk, the surface is a strange and dream-like world that moves too fast and changes too often. However, there are a few members of each population who relish in adventuring into their counterpart's alien world.

Small groups of Drow, typically young adults, will venture to the surface out of curiosity. Of these people, many fall in love with the wonders that cannot be found beneath the earth: a boundless sky, changing seasons, and days and nights. These Drow are colloquially referred to as Sunchasers. Many begin to romanticise the surface, frequently proclaiming its slightest oddities to be fascinating and beautiful, and alleging its people to be enthralling. Such behaviour is generally decried within their own societies.

Act of Rebellion

Drow social norms are generally coloured by emotional repression. Whilst many do oblige to this stoic culture, some lament its subdued nature. Sunchasers commonly fall under this bracket. In an act of defiance, they travel to the colourful surface world where laughter and tears are more openly shared, and where every face wears a different expression. They begin to adopt such mannerisms, indulging in their feelings in a way that would be shameful back home. Additionally, many Sunchasers embrace local fashion. Although most will not cast off the ancestral bone ornaments that they wear, those that do will be shunned if their families uncover this grave insult.

As a Sunchaser ages, they will generally choose to return home to familiar territory. For most, being a Sunchaser is a phase that they will eventually grow out of. However, some find that they feel more at home amongst the surface folk than they ever did at home. These people will choose to permanently relocate to a sun-kissed home. This decision is rarely simple, as it often entails severing ties with many old friends and family, but for some folk this reason is a major incentive for relocation.

Disillusionment

Most Sunchasers fall in love with the idea of the surface world before actually visiting it. They hear tales of its wonders and peculiarities and conceive a fictitious image of it within their minds. Visions of otherworldly vistas and sensations beyond comparison become expected and so, when such a person does finally visit the surface, they are easily disappointed. No matter how impressive and different the new world truly is, it cannot compare to their unattainable expectations of it. It is for this reason that some Sunchasers shirk the identity after a single trip to the surface.

Local Frustrations

Whilst some surface dwellers do enjoy the Sunchasers' enthusiasm, it can sometimes become overbearing. They are notorious for being over-eager, and acting in an almost satirical mimicry of local culture. Those who lack self-awareness inspire second-hand embarrassment wherever they go: mistaking city guards for esteemed knights, loudly singing in quiet taverns, and incessantly talking to locals. In order to avoid such instances of humiliation, most Sunchasers will hire a guide for their first few visits to the surface world.
