The Universe is Alive and Very Lonely

The universe of Babikiye is alive. The consciousness of Babikiye is limited in scope to a narrow point of awareness, preventing It from drowning in its vastness, for every particle of the universe makes up Its true form. While Its limited perspective means that It is neither omniscient nor omnipotent, It is still unmistakeably the most powerful force of nature one could be confronted with if you are especially (un)lucky.   It is exceptionally easy for It to become lost in Its vast work. Stars form at Its touch, planets fall into orbit at Its bidding, all while loneliness watches over Its shoulder. Loneliness is the universe's most familiar companion, an unwelcome friend which has traveled beside It since the universe's beginning. Loneliness drove It to what It considers its magnum opus: the creation of life.

First Companions

Its very first creations were created subconsciously. The universe was very startled at first to discover alternative consciousnesses, aspects of It that had minds that functioned independently from its own. Its first subconscious creation was the spirited personification of air. Over time, three more creations flocked around it: the personifications of temperature, fluidity, and corporeality.   Together, these personifications transformed the Ida's building blocks of creation from mere tools at Its disposal into beloved companions.   However much It loved their new friends, the loneliness not only refused to relent, but increased in magnitude. This felt unfair, but It took It a long time to identify what was missing. None of them shared one important trait that It hadn't even noticed that It had until It was confronted by its absence: memories.

Creating Life

This dilemma led to Its first purposeful forays into the creation of life. Not all of Its experiments were successful, but It had determined that It would give Its first companions nothing but the best. Over the course of what must have been millions if not billions of years (for time had not been conceptualized yet), It spread its experiments with life across the cosmos with the charming pride of a child's first art projects.   For Its final project, It chose to populate a small planet with creatures of all sorts. From microbes to insects crawling the deepest depths of the ocean floor to draconids soaring above the land, the planet absolutely teemed with life. All sentient, none sophont, but some close. All infused with a spirit of their own, though so much smaller than that of the Ida or Its beloved companions.

The Gift of Sophonce

The universe's consciousness saved the gift of sophonce for its stalwart companions. It gifted them corporeal forms and placed them upon the planet, where It promised to join them later. Once Its companions had settled down and It was ready with its own corporeal from that it concocted for Itself, It welcomed what It believed to be Its final personal creation: the personification of sophonce.   The new creation stared up with wonder into the eyes of the universe and named it: Ida. Creator. The personification then went on to invent names for everything, including itself and each of its companions.   "My name is Ezeki and my purpose is to tell stories," it had told the Ida and its companions with the undue confidence of someone who didn't realize they had just invented the first language. The personifications for air, temperature, fluidity, and corporeality became thenceforth known as Fari, Velu, Vanora, and Kotu.   Its four eldest companions looked to the Ida in shock and growing fear as self-awareness truly flooded them for the first time. Overwhelmed with feelings Ezeki hadn't invented words for yet, the Ida said Its first spoken thoughts:
Fear not! I am your Ida, and I love you.

Author's Notes

This article came about when I skimmed over a prompt while looking through the Discord. I don't remember its exact wording, but it asked whether the world was alive/had a consciousness. Long story short, yes!   When I first started to write Babikiye, I envisioned the Ida as a distant, capricious God. I thought it would be this oh so mysterious, conveniently helpful or adversarial force depending on what the plot needed, you know the drill.   Little did I know that this character was so prideful and lonely that it refuses to shut up when it senses someone is interested in it. It is the personification of the universe itself within the world, so when it discovered astronomers existed it did the incorporeal deity version of happy crying. In real life, this somehow includes me, its author. It feels as if my muse for the world developed a voice, growing in complexity along with my understanding of what I want out of Babikiye's tone and themes.

I love the Ida. I feel like I would have a permanent existential crisis if I was conciously aware of all cells in my body at all times though.
