Nodestones

Travel between the planets of Aravu and Kivria is taken for granted today, but it would have been impossible without the invention of Nodestones. Nodestones are Vimstones which have been magically calibrated to transport people from one location to another, ala teleportation. At the present moment, there are only three kinds of nodestones: the Aravun-Kivrian node, the Haven-Bes Islands node, and cutting-edge nodestone "jewelry".   Many folks dream of a world where nodestones revolutionize travel on a broad scale. Instead of traveling by foot, ship, or plane, people could visit their local node station and instantaneously travel across the planet - or another planet entirely!   Unfortunately, there are quite a few hurdles to jump through before that dream can ever come close to reality. The biggest challenge in the way of expansive nodestone travel is energy consumption. As a vimstone, nodestones depend upon spiritual energy to function properly. Even transporting one person between Haven and the Bes Islands back and forth twice is enough to entirely deplete the nodestone - and restoring it is a major feat of spiritual capacity and magical prowess. The only reason the Aravu-to-Kivria Node is so powerful is because it is directly drawing energy from the Afterlife. Before the Afterlife, the node was meticulously maintained via the power of the Magi, members of the Kivrian Project, and the occasional good Samaritan. The node between Haven and the Bes Islands is still maintained thusly, though there are rumors of an alternative afterlife. The spiritual energy required for expansion isn't impossible for some, but for many (particularly the average Kivrian person) it is a dream and nothing more for now.   Another hurdle between Nodestones as a practical vehicle for travel in the future is sourcing the stones themselves. In order to make a nodestone station work, you would need multiple nodestones calibrated to other nodestones in the other locations you want to visit. Even just one nodestone is magically complex to create, let alone a dozen. They are also made from Vimstones, which at the moment are only found naturally on Aravu. Storing them is no simple matter even if they are relocated successfully, considering they have a habit of growing significantly in size over time as well (though regular depletion of spiritual energy helps curb the growth drastically).
Potential Benefits
  • Instantaneous travel, which saves time, money (debatable), and resources
  • Potential resources saved from fewer planes, cars, trains, etc - natural resources preserved.
  • More people able to travel and experience new cultures and landscapes, if they manage to make them accessible
  • Potential Drawbacks
  • How may it impact employment for folks that are enmeshed in the transportation industries as it is currently?
  • Access: who will realistically be able to use nodestones? Who actually wants nodestones? Who would benefit most in reality versus who would actually benefit most from nodestones on a personal/livelihood level?
  • On the planet of Kivria, spiritual energy is an extremely precious resource and folks with magical knowledge of any sort are rare, let alone someone able to produce a nodestone. Alas, the Kivrian populations are also the ones who would stand to benefit from a nodestone system most!
  • Since nodestones are large and require special consideration and care, what would the footprint of facilities to house them look like? What would a nodestone station replace?
