Nykel (Birth Ritual)

When a baby is born in Seryphorm, even if the family is not Endal, a birth ritual is performed. The Endal birth ritual is called a Nykel which roughly translates to Determinant. This ritual is used to determine a newborn Demon’s attributes.

History

In order to determine a newborn Demon's abilities, the Nykel was created around the time of the Great Fall.
Prior to the ceremony, families would find out their child's abilities when the child started developing them at five years and would have the child try various things in hope that the powers would reveal themselves.

Execution

  • About a week after the infant’s birth, friends and family of the newborn’s parent(s) will gather at the Dest of Awiss the Simple, who is the God of Childhood.
  • The infant will be placed on a blanket or mat wearing a simple white gown. A circle of Osery will be made around the infant; nine, one for each God except Kinennys and Lorché.
  • The Ritual Perfomer will perform the Determinant Prayer  to the Gods, asking them to show the babe’s true energies. Usually, the candles applying to the child's abilities will light, one at a time, the first candle being their primary ability.

Components and tools

  • Nine Osery (One for each of the relevent Gods).
  • A mat on which the child will be placed.

Participants

  • The week-old infant
  • The infant's parent(s)
  • The Ritual Performer (The Diroxu of Awiss, the Per'Diroxu or the Easter Heir)

Observance
