Neshara

Neshara is the word for the state of transcendent joy invoked during ritual by the priests of Okarun in Khaldai . It is attained through the consumption of Sharum, a fruit held sacred by those who worship Okarun. This fruit is traditionally only consumed during the great celebration and ritual of Nashar-Thal, and its groves are closely guarded by the priesthood to prevent abuse. Despite this, there is a small but lucrative trade in stealing and selling Sharum fruit in the settlements near Okaruni temple groves.

Causes

The specific state of elation known as Neshara is exclusively created through ingesting Sharum fruit. At least half of an average sized fruit is needed to induce this condition. Scientists have been unable to isolate the exact compound within the fruit that gives it its properties. Attempts have been made to replicate the state of Neshara through techniques such as meditation, drumming, or prayer, but no substitute has been found yet.

Symptoms

Neshara has been described as beginning with feelings of warmth, lightness, and a general sense of well-being. It then quickly progresses to a sense of bliss or ecstasy. Participants in the Nashar-Thal report a sense of connection to Okarun and the divine in general, as well as expanded awareness. Some report a sense of lost time or timelessness. Effects reach their peak within five to seven minutes of consuming, then slowly taper off over the next few hours.   Excessive use and abuse of Sharum leads to a condition known colloquially as Touching Dust. Here the effects of Neshara lead to withdrawal symptoms such as feelings of despair or emptiness, loss of time, disorientation, hallucination, and paranoia, as well as fragmenting consciousness. The fruit is psycologically addictive, and so called "Dustchasers" have intense cravings for it after long use.
