Silent Grayling
There is a myth that tells the tale of a young wizard who left the college early, claiming to know enough magic to never need their "books and learning", who founded a small village, nestled among the ends of 2 rivers. He drew in people with his magic and charm, and convinced them that if they tilled the land, he would guarantee they would never starve, for he could sustain the crops with magic. It worked for awhile, he would cast his spells and the village grew over time. Eventually the villagers learned to fish, and was able to supplement their crops with the fish from the rivers, and they always had plenty to eat.
One year the wizards magic "failed him". The crops died, and the wizard claimed it was because the villagers didn't work hard enough, and that his magic couldn't do all the work. Little did the villagers know, that the wizard was no longer a wizard, he hadn't studied his books in years. He did nothing all day and was treated like a king.
Luckily for the villagers they survived that winter off of the stores they had, from grains to fish.
Over the next few years the crops grew less and less, each year the villagers stores diminished, and each year the wizard did nothing.
Then one day an old woman walks into town. She wore the robes of a college student, and carried a letter addressed to the wizard. It is said that the letter was a summons, but no one knew for sure, but the wizard grew angry at the woman and demanded she leave. He threw whatever he could reach and grabbed his staff in an attempt to banish her.
When he wielded the staff he spoke the words of a spell, and to his own surprise, it started to glow. The end of the staff grew brilliantly, casting away all shadows from the middle of town. The light grew larger and brighter with each word he spoke, and the wind picked up as he chanted.
The woman, being a practitioner herself joined in and raised her staff to the man, and let off her spell a second before the wizard finished. A ball of red light struck the wizard square in the chest as the end of his staff burst into light engulfing the whole of the town and its rivers.
At the end of it all, there were two staves on the ground, each being accompanied by a flopping fish. The townspeople, not knowing what to do, threw both fish into the water. It was discovered then that the fish went invisible when in the rivers.
After a few years, the town had reestablished itself without the help of the wizard. The townspeople started seeing translucent fish in the rivers. Almost invisible, but not quite. Being short of a name since the demise of their leader, they named the town after the fish, and the fish after the Wizard Grayling.
