Session 22: Specters and Fumes

The gang did some more exploring, after discovering that each of them seemed to have some kind of strange, magical mark somewhere on their bodies that was reacting to the energy of the forge. Deeper still, they met with a wraith who seemed concerned about his treasures, but was more willing to part with them (and make deals), once he discovered that the Spectator had been dealt with.   While Ana gathered the provided monetary gains, Therei began investigating some magically preserved tomes the wraith had available, using it to refresh his memory on history in the surrounding areas, some knowledge on folklore, and a strange tome about the ancient history of the Aarakocra which seemed to reference some odd details. It also seemed to be the source of a strange shaking or rattling noise when moved, but the source could not be found, so a barter was made in exchange for a staff.   Continuing their exploration, they found a cave of mushrooms and fungus which Thia warned could spray poisonous gas if disturbed. One by one they began to move carefully through, but a mistake led to gas filling the room and Thia being poisoned briefly in the process. After temporarily separating and discussing their options, the party were happy to see the gas dissipate after a minute or two, leaving the room (albeit temporarily) safe to cross as normal.   They navigated most of the remaining regions of the mine, finding an old store-room and the former encampment of the ghouls they'd previously faced, before ultimately returning to check on Gundren and Nundro. Neither seemed to have information on the strange marks, and in fact seemed to find the concept strange and out of character for the mines. Luckily, Gundren could at least provide a vial of holy water to assist in the final task of nullifying the flameskull they'd previously battled, which had resurrected twice already. Steadying themselves, they prepared for this final confrontation...
