A series of dragon attacks, sometimes spread months apart, befell Crabbe-by-the-Sea. Eventually, Rastynex the Corrosive Maven descended upon the capital and ruled over the city for most of the year 1260 2A. The monarch of Wessil ruled from temporary camps further inland until a coalition of mercenaries and Wessilite soldiers were able to defeat the dragon in a costly assault to retake the city.

When the first young black dragon attacked Crabbe-by-the-Sea in the year 1258 2A, many hoped it was a one-off occurrence of a young ambitious dragon reaching too far from home. When more attacks followed a month later, the city knew it was in for a tumultuous time. Sometimes the attacks would happen a few weeks apart, sometimes it was several months. But there were always more dragons, though all were young or younger adult dragons. Many in Wessil believed this pointed to a powerful ancient dragon lurking in the nearby swamps.   After more than two years of fending off regular dragon attacks, the city of Wessil found themselves on the receiving end of an ancient black dragon raid in early 1261 2A. Rastynex the Corrosive Maven descended upon the city at dusk, casting a massive black shadow in the dwindling light. Within minutes, several areas of the city were engulfed in corrosive acid that ate away buildings and melted people and animals to sludge.   The queen at the time took as many of her court and advisors as she could and fled further inland, establishing a temporary camp near Croppschire. She ruled from here for the better part of the year, trying to help refugees escape the city. Eventually, she was able to amass an army of her own soldiers and several dozen mercenary companies willing to assault the city and take down the dragon tyrant. This assault ended up accomplishing its objective, though almost 80% of the assault force was killed or seriously injured in the attack. The queen and her people had their capital back, but much of the city was uninhabitable, drowning in pools of acid.   More than 200 years after the defeat of Rastynex, a few areas of the city are still uninhabitable and in the process of being rebuilt. This dark period in Wessil's history served as inspiration during the recent Everyn War when the kingdom found itself under heavy attack and threat of defeat. The aggressors did eventually conquer Wessil, but the defenders made it very costly.
