Monk

Overview

Monks are disciplined individuals devoted to self-mastery, spiritual understanding, and the pursuit of balance between body, mind and soul. They may or may not be tied to a single deity or belief system, but usually have a strict code of behaviour which they adhere to. Across Axora there are many different monastic orders scattered across the continents with each order differing in its philosophies, techniques and affliations. Most monks live communally in monasteries, temples or other sacred locations, though some take to the road as pilgrims.

Lifestyle

A monk's life is one of structure and devotion to an ideal. Typically, monks are early risers, beginning the day with some form of meditation or training. Diet is often restricted, and based on whatever the local area can provide naturally. Monks are typically taught to renounce material possessions and live simply, though exceptions exist. Study of philosophy, ancient texts, and spiritual traditions is common. Though not all monastic orders are warriors, many train forms of martial combat. This is not done for conquest but for defence, focus and internal mastery. This makes monks suits to act as guardians. Many orders are founded on sacred sites, or around ancient artefacts that they are sworn to protect.

To become a monk is to commit to discipline. Some join in their youth, others seek initiation after a moment of personal upheaval. Training can be demanding, typically involving years of dedication to menial service, mental trials and physical effort. To become a monk, an individual must aside their ego. In many traditions, advancement through ranks within the orders is symbolised by changing garments and the adoption of a new title. Higher ranking monks are not chosen by age or strength alone, but by their composure and dedication to their cause.

Role

Though monks often reside apart of everyday life, their influence is felt in education, philosophy, medicine and martial disciplines. Monasteries and temples often serve as centres of learning, spiritual healing and cultural preservation. Monks may be sought out to act as natural mediators in disputes. Monks rarely interfere in political matters unless their way of life or location is under threat. However, in times of crisis, this is not unusually for them to be called into action, and their communes are safe harbour for individuals in need, whether they wish to join the order or not.

Examples

Order of the Unwavering Soul

The Order of the Unvwavering Soul reside at the Santua ol'Sola Estada, the namesake Temple of the Unwavering Soul. Their belief is one of inner stillness and spiritual endurance. They are led by their Solaquin (Revered Soul). Their martial discipline is refined, blending slow, deliberate movement with sudden explosive strikes, their symbology revolves around that of the earth and the water. Their temple is a notable sanctuary for many people, with the Order taking up a fraction of the total populace there but even if an individual is not a strict follower of the doctrines, they are respectful of them.
