Gateway City of Khnum

The city is an impressive sight on approach, but a great deal of it is built into the steep mountain cliffs that make up the sides of the narrow valley.
— Anat Sokol, Scholar

Overview

Gateway cities hold outsized influence on the happenings of the Deshret Continent as they control the few passes into and out of the continent's interior. Khnum is one of these cities. It is situated at the north eastern pass of the Rayiq Mountain Ring where it controls and greatly benefits from the flow of trade.

The Great Markets

Khnum's most recognizable feature is the great road that bisects it from one end of the valley to another. Flanking this road are lines of obelisks commemorating the city's honored. Admist these obelisks are large, well kept market spaces offering a number of goods and services. This is by design, and it is meant to provide for the wants of needs of all sorts of travelers making their way across the Rayiq Mountains- for a price.

The Gateway Cities

Gateway cities are those cities located in the rare clear pass between the Oniruuru Desert and the continent's coastal region. This position effectively means that any goods coming out of or into the continent's inner desert must travel through one of these cities, and the cities rarely let someone through without receiving their share of taxes.

Ancient Cliff-Side Districts

To those passing through the narrow valley, Khnum appears to be a narrow settlement settlement meant to capitalize its unique geographical position. In truth, no one is certain how big the city is, or rather can be. Carved into the great cliffs that flank either side of Khnum are great carved labyrinths. It is commonly believed that the carved districts were made by The Ancient Order, and that they were once great vaults or arks that provided shelter during The Great Collapse. Many passages end in rubble, locked behind great immovable barriers, or are otherwise inaccessible. Others are so complex that those who venture into them too often are never seen again.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

Immovable barriers? I wonder what the Ancients are trying to hide? - Archivist Edward   What if they're trying to keep it out? - Archivist Rena   You never know what is lurking in Ancient halls I suppose. It is bewildering to think about how much they were up to, and that is based on what has been recovered. - Archivist Edward
