The Unbound

The Unbound (a.k.a. He-Who-Chooses, The Breaker of Chains, The Rebel)

The Unbound does not teach us to rail against society because we are to be free of rules. He does not teach us to live our lives however we want and ignore the consquences to ourselves or others. He teaches us to choose our lives within limits. To choose whether we follow the rules of a just society or leave and found our own. Or to even live outside of civilization and leave by the laws of nature. Of course, he also pushes for us to overthrow unjust societies and unjust rulers as well. It is up to each one of us to choose how we live but our choices and our freedom ends whether another begins.
— Unknown Author, Freedom's Progress

The Unbound, also known as: He-Who-Chooses, The Paragon of Choice, The Protector of Freedom, The Breaker of Chains, and even known as the Lord of Justice, is the God of Freedom, Liberation, and Justice. He is the youngest of the Adventuring Seven but still one of the most widespread gods. His portfolio includes providing freedom to all, specifically through allowing them to make their own choices. He does not have a realm of his own but resides in the Infinite Plane of Archaon, liking to hang out in the Hall of Skill and the Endless City.

Divine Domains

The Unbound's main domain is that of Freedom. He, along with Azatas who focus on freedom, advises those who seek them out to follow their path. This is often by seeing their heart's desire and pushing them to go for it. It is why the Unbound is one of the favorites amongst adventurers as He pushes them to cast off the shackles of expectation and wants of others and be who they wish to be. Of course, He refuses to let them use it as a shield from consequences. Freedom of choice does not mean freedom from consequence and one is free to do as they please as long as they can deal with the consequences.

Liberation is another major domain of the Unbound. There are many people who have had their freedom taken away from them instead of given away. So He motivates others to fight for those who can't free themselves. The most common people He works to save are slaves, both normal and indentured servants. Of course, this makes the Unbound an enemy to supporters of slave labor and feudalism alike. His followers are likely the reason why pure Feudalism is no longer practiced in Avestra, proving to be enough of a nuisance to end it. However, most acts of Liberation occur against foes such as the Devils of Diekon who routinely practice slavery.

His last major domain is that of Justice. Not Karmic Justice as the All-Witness believes or Vengeance but true Justice. In situations where one was wronged, it isn't enough that the perpetrator suffers or the victim is helped, both must be ensured as consequences for the actions taken. If someone takes away another's freedom, followers of the Unbound don't rest until the oppressed are free and the oppressor pays for what they've done.

Artifacts

  • Liberation's Key A magical key capable of unlocking anything in the universe. Most assume it to be used against physical locks but it can also be used to unlock the potential of anyone who focuses on it. It was said to be used in a legendary heist on the vaults of Diekon and is a prize many Azata search for. It is constantly moving, never staying with one holder for too long.
  • Justice's Polearm An artifact that used to be the signature weapon of the Unbound. What at first appears to a halberd can be transformed into a glaive, naginata or even more. This weapon was used to slay the first King of Hell. This sent a cosmic backlash through all devils, making them irrationally afraid of this weapon. It is also the one of the only weapon that can permanently kill a fiend.
  • Bow of Justice It is said that the Unbound once met a young monarch who inspired Him in their quest for justice. The bow is a longbow based off the monarch's design and its arrows have the ability to dispel illusions and enchantments. If fired at the sun or at the moons, it can create a wide area where no lie can be spoken for a short time.

Holy Books & Codes

The Tome of the Unbound is the core book of The Unbound's faith. Some say that it was written by The Unbound Himself since so many Gods asked for Him to do so. However, He had azata and plenty of mortals edit and tweak the book over the years at their leisure. In the beginning of the book, the story talks about a undescribed protagonist set upon by moments where they had to make their own decisions, and showed two visions of what could become of the person. Either they make the choice to give up their freedom and bend to another or they continue to live for their own freedom. The rest of the book is how priests of the The Unbound are meant to act, offering guidance to people who are unsure to do in the face of some many choices.

The Book of Justice is co-written by followers of The Unbound and The All-Witness, a guide on how to be judges and and members of the justice system. However, it also outlines how to be a freedom fighter as warriors who seek to liberate the enslaved or warriors who seek vengeance for wronged parties or themselves. At first, it was made from the conversations between the two Gods but it has annotated and rewritten to include more examples as each culture has their own brand of justice to account for.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

As a symbol of freedom, everyone has a different concept of The Unbound's holy symbol. On coastal areas, He has the sigil of an anchor with a broken chain or a ship sailing into the sun. For those in land-locked areas, His symbol is that of a bird, especially predator birds such as Eagles for birds have the greatest freedom of all. Sometimes, His symbol is that of scales to represent Justice or other symbols connected to it.

Tenets of Faith

  • All have the right to free will and should have the ability to make their own choices and accept the consequences for their choices.
  • To deny one their freedom is to be a rival to the Unbound. All chains should be broken and the people free to submit if they choose
  • Justice only comes when the wrongs have been righted, both for the victim and the perpetrator

Holidays

The Leap day that appears on every 4th year of the calendar is sometimes known as "The Day of Freedom" and attributed to The Unbound. It is a reminder that even time itself can be unshackled and freed from its bounds. The Unbound is known to attend New Years' Celebrations during this time and even give gifts to many, even the downtrodden since Giftmore is still ongoing. Azata join Him in this endeavor, spreading joy and gifts across the land.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

  • Break all chains that bide one from their freedom
  • End the scourge of the Devils and teach the Archons to think for themselves
  • Right wrongs for the benefit of ending the cycle of retribution

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

The Unbound can appear as any species due to His faith being widespread but one of his most common appearances include Humans, Elves, and Orcs, who are the most widespread of any of the Avestran races. His eyes always shine with a gold or blue hue. However, when He is enraged and serious, His face shifts and darkens with his eyes becoming dark brown.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The Unbound came to be closer to when mortalkind gained sapience than any other of the Seven. As a result, He was treated as the youngest, often looked upon as a child in some respects. After all, free will and freedom was a nascent ideal to the Gods and even to the Outsiders that existed beyond. And in that treatment, some decided to take that as Him being not much of a threat. After the fall of the First Daemon, some of the other Outsiders started testing their limits. The most notable being the devils who thought that The Unbound would not be much of a threat to them.

This was proven to be incorrect during The Blood War when He saw the devils slaughtering azata and watched as they manipulated the growing mortals into soldiers for their army. Basically children who didn't even know what to do with the free will they had been granted. And so He entered the Blood War and in a solitary campaign, He slaughtered the Fiends, buying time for the Celestials to bring an end to the war on their terms. However, even once the curse had been struck, The Unbound did not stop. He cut through their forces and through each layer until He arrived on Thronus. He then slew the first King of Hell and the absolute hatred and power He poured into His final blow sent out a cosmic shockwave. It made all Devils fear The Unbound and his signature weapon to this day and His followers have a constant target on their backs due to His actions.

The other members of the Seven could not condone His actions, leading to the Unbound once again staying out of the way of major events. However, He would have followers that push the ideals that He Himself couldn't anymore. At least until after the War for Avestra, when the return of the Eternals gave Him newfound freedom to pursue what He wanted once again. Of course, He no longer takes center stage as He allows mortals to follow their own path and he is there to motivate them. And help them be free from tyranny.

Taboos

Tyranny is what the Unbound cannot abide the most. He despises despots and tyrants who dare to take freedom from others and act as if they have the right to. It is one thing for someone to give up their freedom in sound mind and sound body but to take it away is foul. He detests slavery just as much, especially the type that sees people born into it, never able to excise the freedom and free will they were born with. At the same time, He dislikes those who think freedom means free to do anything they want without any consequences. Bandits, criminals, and others claim to follow Him who believe in freedom without consequence but that is not what He believes. And when their prayers are not answered, they are quick to realize what he truly believes in.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Divine Allies

The Unbound is a friend to most gods due to His nature. However, there are those He favors above others. Amongst the core seven, one of His closest bonds is with that of The All-Witness . As both are arbiters of justice, the two are often in good company together, along with The Raven Queen. The All-Witness is the one who tempers the Unbound's impulses and His drive for freedom, having been the one who stopped what would've been His ceaseless incursion into Diekon after the death of the First King of Hell. Both of them recognize that all actions have consequences and that people are free to seek retribution for actions they believe have wronged them. However, the Unbound takes the view that it is better to stop vengeance and karmic justice since it could only continue the cycle. Followers of The All-Witness and The Unbound are often judges together or help settle disputes.

The Wayfarer is another god who The Unbound favors as the two of them are seen as patrons of adventurers. The Unbound loves the Wayfarer's connection to traveling, having been inspired by Them to constantly travel Avestra and beyond. To never stay in one place unless absolutely necessary. It is common for the two to meet in The Infinite Edge and talk about places they've seen and the people they met. The Unbound's followers house idols and shrines for the Wayfarer and shelter Their followers since They often don't have shrines of their own.

The Heart takes a parental-like role to The Unbound, treating Him almost like a child when it comes to His interests. The role of a Liberator is to give people their freedom but also to maintain it as well in the Heart's eyes. As such, They often guide His impulses towards aiding others and helped guide Him to His role as the God of Justice. The Unbound's followers often stay behind in lands they've freed, making sure oppression never returns and they often rely on followers of The Heart to help them rebuild society.

Heralds

The Watcher on the Edges is a Herald of both The Unbound and the All-Witness, sharing duties between the two of them. For the Unbound, she serves as basically as a Custodian, meant to rein Him in rather than service His impulses like His other herald likes to. Sightings of her with Him often have her giving Him a hard stare when He refuses to think through a decision. Or acting without social graces as she treats Him more as an equal rather than a God. Of course, He finds no problem with it and His followers have noticed He sometimes does it on purpose. No one knows the origins of this herald but the way The Unbound and her act with each other suggest they are long-term friends.

The Chainbreaker is a Devil who chose to turn their back on their nature. It is said they were a servant or even the second-in-command to the first King of Hell who turned away from them or even betrayed them. However, the cosmic shock that made Devils fear The Unbound made the Chainbreaker see Him as a solution and an example of the folly of Tyranny. They push Him to continue His work in destroying tyranny wherever He finds it and there have been questions on whether they are playing The Unbound. Some of his circle don't fully trust them but He gives them the benefit of the doubt, knowing He could kill them should they ever turn their back on their redemption.

Other Allies

The Azata are some of The Unbound's greatest allies, spirits of mortals who strived for freedom or natural inhabitants of Archaon. He refuses to let them serve Him but they do work together from time to time. It is why He made Archaon his home, finding their nature and their actions so agreeable with his own nature. It is not uncommon to find The Unbound with several Azata in whatever region he visits.

However, beside His fellow gods, the Eternals are fascinating to The Unbound. They were people supposedly shackled to fates where they would serve the role of gods and yet they find themselves in a world where they are free to do as they please. As such, He keeps a close eye on them, watching to see who accepts their free will and who tries to give it up. He was supposedly there when the Eternal Emperor's empire fell and has watched as they've made their choices. He has His favorites that He refuses to say but those that know him can tell who his favorites are.

Enemies

If there is one enemy The Unbound can't stand, it is the Devils of Diekon. He seems them as the greatest example of despots and tyrants in the entire universe. It is only thanks to the advice and counsel of His Elders that He hasn't smote them or their realm as He did in the ancient past. However, that doesn't mean He doesn't encourage his followers to make trouble for them. There is a reason so many abolitionists and revolutionaries carry His sigil after all. Though, he dislikes all slavers, such as the Muspel of Sgand, the Efreet of Firum or the slavers under Arxin the Overseer.

Social Aptitude

There are two sides to The Unbound: The Free Spirit and the Justiciar. The Free Spirit is the friendliest person that one could meet out in the world. If one has met Him, they'll never know it. He has taken from the Eternals and their methods of blending in, choosing to live in the world as an ordinary person. However, He exudes this positive, mischievous air that makes people at ease when they're around him. He can be someone that others confides in and trust and He never pushes them to do something they don't want to do. After all, they are free to choose their own path.

The Justiciar, the Liberator, is a far different beast. That is The Unbound who killed the first King. That is the God who sees all tyranny in the world and wishes to see it eradicated. It should be no surprise that any who model themselves after this version of Him are often rebels and abolitionists. There is no trickster, no jovialness, there is only wrath. Wrath for any oppressor until they learn to fear Him and learn to give the people back their freedom. This is the God who unnerves Fiends and Celestials alike. Who the slavers of Avestra fear the followers of. And it is a side of Him that He does not wish to bring out often but must.

Hobbies & Pets

The Unbound is always traveling, staying in one place for short periods at a time. A God that loves to blend in amongst mortals and watch how they act and what they do with their choices. One doesn't know that they're dealing with Him until He chooses to reveal Himself which is very rare except in the tales spread due to His travels. One easy way to spot Him is that birds love to flock to him as they are often symbols of freedom and even Giant Eagles and the like are know n to flock to His presence, especially two special ones that hail from Archaon.
