Hailing from the Eastern part of the Si Wong Desert, Qel resides in the poorest and most desolate part of the desert. Qel spends most days out gathering what little supplies he can to help his tribe and family survive
Despite this harsh lifestyle, Qel is generally optimistic and upbeat compared to most Sand People. Qel tries to see the good side of life whenever possible. But, deep inside, Qel is worried that his family and tribe won't last for much longer in the desert. If his family could somehow move out of the desert, Qel would feel much more at ease.
Due to his family's constant need, Qel rarely ever travels far from his home in the Eastern Desert. When he does, it's only to do one thing: watch the Great Sand Race. After witnessing the final race of Sunaret, who many considered to be the greatest Sand Racer of all time, Qel decide he would one day become a Sand Racer for his tribe.
Without any formal training, Qel won the most recent Great Sand Race at the age of 17, becoming the youngest winner since the legendary Sunaret. Qel's promise as a powerful sandbender caught the eye of Sunaret, who took Qel under his wing and trained him further in sandbending and sandsailing.
Now, Qel is preparing for the upcoming Great Sand Race taking place within the next few weeks. If Qel can win the race again, he will gain great fame and influence among the Sand Tribes. If Qel gains this fame, he hopes to leverage his influence to help his home village.

Qel never recieved a formal education due to his family needing him to work as soon as he was able to. However, Qel has been able to learn some things from traders passing through his village, mainly about rudimentary economics.

Qel is the youngest Sand-bender to ever win the Great Sand Race, doing so at 17 years old.
